Job lived in Uz. He was a very good man who respected God.
You could see his respect for God in the way he lived his life, in the way he resisted temptation.
He had 7 sons and 3 daughters, owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 oxen, 500 donkeys, and had a lot of servants.
He was quite rich. As a matter of fact, he was the most prominent man in the whole Eastern territory!
His sons would take turns hosting feasts at their homes. (The sisters were also invited to share in the festivities.)
When they had finished a full round of celebrations, Job would sacrifice a burnt offering to God for each child.
He was concerned that perhaps they had gotten carried away and thought or done evil things during their parties.
Job did this regularly because he loved his children and he loved God.
One day the angels were coming before the LORD but this time Satan the accuser came with them.
The LORD said to Satan, "What have you been up to?"
Satan the accuser answered the LORD, "I've been all over the earth going back and forth."
The LORD then bragged about Job.
"Have you noticed my servant Job?
I am so proud of him.
He is one of a kind.
Holy and good.
He respects me and does not live an evil lifestyle."
"Of course he acts good!" said Satan. "Who wouldn't live holy if it meant that they would always get everything that they wanted! You protect him and his whole family from trouble. You have made him incredibly rich. He has everything a man could want!
Just wait and see how holy he is when you take some of this away from him... Then you'll hear him curse you to your face!"
"Okay", the LORD said.
"You can take away his things.
But you cannot do any harm to his body at all."
Then Satan the accuser went out from the presence of the LORD.
