This was the THE end of a great Boston radio giant and the beginning of another Boston radio success story, WBMX ("Mix 98.5"). It was tastefully done (I might add)!

WLS (890) Chicago, IL
Early (1984) AM Stereo Tests, (Harris system)

In Stereo. Received by "yours' truly" in Wareham, MA
This was during the time WLS was experimenting with the (now deleted) Harris AM Stereo system. This was received with a modified AM Belar/Harris/C-QUAM receiver (decoder). WLS is now using the C-QUAM AM Stereo system.

It was loud, brashy Top-40 FM radio.....and we loved it!! It was the beginning of the end for Top-40 music on AM radio, as well. It sounds as crisp and clear (and LOUD!!) as you remember!! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!

This was recorded in April, 1988, toward the end of Simon's tenure at WVCA-FM (now WBOQ).
He was probably the most famous "one-man show" in radio history. Just give a listen.

WRKO-FM "Arko-matic" Drop-ins from 1966

"Come on over to the FM side!"
These were the famous Sonovox voicers that made "Arko" famous.
WRKO-FM (ex-WROR, now WBMX) became Boston's FIRST FM Rocker on October 12, 1966.
FM radios became a HOT item in Boston, that fall!

WVBF-FM Jingle Composite from 1971-1976

"Stereo 105"
Boston's FIRST LIVE Top-40 FM Rocker actually came from Framingham, MA.
Stereo 105 was the first real FM competition to long-time Top-40 AM rocker WRKO.
AND, they were GOOD!

WXHR-FM (96.9) Cambridge, MA- Summer 1959

"Boston's First and most powerful Concert Station"

WXHR-FM, one of Boston's premier FM radio stations is still alive today as WTKK/"96.9 FM Talk".
Prior to that, it was WSJZ, WKLB, WBCS, WCDJ and the late and lamented WJIB-FM, one of America's most listened-to "beautiful music" stations (1967-1990).

WHTT/WMRQ-FM (103.3) Boston Format Change- 7/7/86

"Q-103, Boston's Quality Rock"
Recorded by "yours' truly" in Brockton, MA
103.3 FM in Boston was one of the Hub's premier FM stations. It started life as WEEI-FM in 1948. Eventually it became WHTT Power 103 in 1983, WMRQ in 1986. And today, it is the famous WODS Oldies 103.3. Here is the 7:00 pm format switch that started the one and a half year experiment that eventually gave way for Oldies 103, in the fall of 1987.
