Number Systems

Skip the math lesson ... Number System Applet ... and let's get on with it.

All right ... the human condition is to normally have 10 fingers. Maybe that's the reason that when counting, and we come to 10, we start all over again with the one's/two's/three's etc. Thus we call it: the Decimal system. Note: deci means ten, that's a short Latin lesson ... no charge.

Now, had we been born, just for example, and thank G-d we weren't ... with 2 fingers, we would be counting to 2 and start all over again. Eureka: the "binary" system. And a 3 would be written: 11, and a 4 would be written: 100 ... and a 5 would be written: 101 ... a 6 would be written: 110 ... a 7 written: 111 ... etc. Just think of number columns... one's, two's, and four's columns.

As we all know, in the decimal system, we have a one's column, a ten's column, a hundred's column, etc ... each column a multiple of 10 ... in the binary system we have a one's column, a two's column, a four's column ... each column a multiple of two ... Well, I think it is interesting ... go do me something ... Below you will find other number systems constructed the same way.

Just a point of interest folks ... it is this binary system that is the basis for all computering ... the 1 means the circuit is ON and the 0 means the circuit is OFF. That's about it, see the converter below. Now you can enter a number in decimal, click some blank space on the window, and the other systems appear - you are an official registered number system converter - congrats.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: You cannot enter on any line a number that is NOT in that number system ... So for example, in the binary system, you can only enter zeros and ones, in the ternary system, no numerals above 2 ... (because in that system, there are no numerals above 2, etc. etc.) ... they just won't register.

For the next lesson I'll need your name, address (deed to your house), SSN, date of birth, mother's maiden name, bank account number, ATM password (your ATM card would be appreciated), bank vault number (key of course), car registration (signed over to yours truly), copy of your Will where I am the direct beneficiary (naturally), and any other pertinent information that might be to your benefit - as you can see, I'm only thinking of you.
