DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY

Interdialogging with Sam on:

COPROTS AND FEPROTS

SAM, on June 28, 1998 you posted in SabraNet,

Dr. Ghitis, in your "Quarks and Philosophy" essay you said at the end that in order for Man to limit himself, he ought to reshape his cognitive and his affective (feeling) proteins, i.e., coprots and feprots...

Sam, I commented about reshaping the 'Coprots and Feprots,' supposed entities that are entirely my conception. Regarding the coprots, that's the name I coined for the cognitive proteins, based on a recent discovery: if laboratory animals submitted to learning a task are treated with substances that prevent protein synthesis, they will be unable to learn. It should be no surprise to learn that perhaps proteins of a special configuration are the repositories of 'bits' of memory. That we believe that we memorize as a continuum, is an illusion. It should now be obvious that we memorize discontinuously, most probably by means of 'discrete' --meaning separate-- protein molecules. Simmilarly, movies use discrete, discontinuous frames, which make believe our mind that we see a continuum.
However, the experimental results might be interpreted as indicating that enzymes required for the memory process are inhibited by the substances administered to the experimental rats

...I can't agree with you more. The forefront of medical science today is dealing with the challenge of biological systems improving and reshaping themselves without artificial and external interference and in addition to mere mutations and other uncontrollable genetic transformations...

This is too sweeping a statement... Do you mind if I remind you that unambiguous language is a sine qua non for alethic dialog?

...An outstanding work is currently being done on "bio feedback" and the resultant change in the biochemical structure of the brain...

One is not the 'same' person whenever one learns something. This change is due to brain phenomena. Place a new coprot (also by bio-feedback) in the cognitive cells, and it will impact the rest. Add to any cell something that reacts with a component, and the whole cell will change. Cells even possess mechanisms for self-destruction; this 'suicide' is called 'apoptosis.' All changes in living organisms are 'biochemical' by definition.

...I am leaning towards the theory that there is a "monitoring" group of "coprots" whose sole purpose is to check the rest of the coprots...

Without monitoring there is no order. While we are occupied seeing something, monitoring coprots must provide existing information, if we are going to understand what we are seeing. Other coprots are checking colors, shapes, borders, relationships... It has to be assumed that feprots will be supplying the emotional memories for wholesome impressions. Coprots are created most vividly when emotion is attached to an event.
There are coprots for 'immediate,' 'working,' and 'long acting,' memories. Irrelevant coprots are labile, destroyed, 'forgotten.' Coprots associated with extremely unpleasant feprots may be 'sent' to a 'basement' from which they might be difficult to retrieve. {The 'repressed unconscious'.}
And, a most amazing thing, coprots are also continuosly providing the information that we are capable of seeing! How do I know this?
I treated a patient with Acute Leukemia that had invaded his brain. The neurological manifestations receded with chemotherapy, except that he became blind. Amazingly, the patient was not aware, was not 'conscious' of his blindness! He had to be restrained from walking, because he not only did not see the obstacles, but because he did not know that he could not see them.
Sam, once you grasp the meaning of what I am saying, you will 'see' better... The situation described can be mimicked by means of hypnosis, on which I have a rather vast experience.

...When called for, the monitoring coprots will transfer the right genetic code to the appropriate mRNA to synthesize the reshaped coprot...

Perhaps there are genes for the making of many types of coprots and feprots. Yet once one is made, it will not change with time, so that it can not be reshaped. In my post you referred to, I used the word 'reshape' in a figurative way. I was sort of meaning that presumably deleterious interrelationships between 'cognitive proteins' and 'feeling' ones, might be the explanation for neurotic manifestations, and that the benefit obtained with psychotherapy might be attributed to a benefical change in those relationships.
I wouldn't dare go further on hypothetical possibilities. However, I believe that neurotransmitters --such as serotonin-- must be secreted in right concentrations, if 'wrong' interrelationships, resulting in 'neurotic' (non-psychotic) mental manifestations, are to be prevented. A very significant segment of the population is born with an insufficient capacity to secrete serotonin, thus making them liable to develop neuroses, AND to succumb to emotional limitations in their ability to deal rationally with stressful challenges.

ADDENDUM: In 1998 it was discovered that an enzyme required to synthethize the retinal proteins sensitive to light acts within trillionths of a second. It should be clear that sight is a series of "frames" made by such sensitive proteins as they are created and destroyed in sequences of many billions per second.
Thus, sight is discontinuous, made of so many frames per unit of time as to appear to be continuous and instantaneous. It should be the same with the other senses, since only by erasing a perception it is possible to perceive the following one.
