DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY

ANALOGIES 5 and 6

Chose one of the three Samples as the most analogous to the Model, and write it down, with your reasoning.

5.- Violin-Music

Guitar-Painting
Brick-House
Marble-Sculpture

6.- Sun-Earth

Galaxy-Star
Star-Planet
Earth-Moon

CHOICE AND EXPLANATION

5.- Guitar - Painting :-) Guitar and Violin are musical instruments; Music and Painting are arts. Sculpture is also an art, but Marble is not an instrument, but a formative, shapeable material. A House may be considered as an expression of artitectural art, but brick is just one of the many materials employed in architecture.
Still, in this Game we cannot say that "as violin is to music, so is music to painting." Therfore, this is not a true analogy; the reasoning is as follows: "As guitar and violin are musical instruments, music and painting are arts." This is a type of reasoning, but not by analogy.

6.- Star - Planet :-) Sun is a Star, Earth is a Planet of the Sun. Galaxies are composed by millions of Stars. Our Sun belongs to the Milky Way Galaxy. Moons are satellites of Planets; Earth has only one Moon. Not all Planets have satellites: Jupiter has twelve. There are nine major Planets, the nearest to the Sun being Mercury, and Pluto the farthest away ; there are thousands of minor planets (asteroids). Earth rotates in-between Venus and Mars, i.e., between love and war.
In this Game, the analogy is by attribute of definition. This type of analogy will be discussed further on.
