Balmacaan House and Estate

This beautiful mansion house, built in its original form in the 16th century and upgraded periodically, was the summer residence of the various Earls and Countesses of Seafield whose Estate covered a great part of Scotland. Many of the population of Drumnadrochit were employed by Balmacaan Estate i.e. Blacksmiths, gardeners, coach drivers, house servants and general estate workers.Balmacaan House In the late 19th and early 20th century Balmacaan House was rented out to an American Industrialist called Bradley Martin. Mr Martin was a great benefactor to the local community, organizing yearly parties for the local children and paying for the plans and building of the new Public Hall in 1906. The hall is still in use by the community today. When the Martin family departed from Balmacaan the house fell into decline. Eventually in the early 1940's the estate was put on the market and sold off in sections. Balmacaan House met its fate in the 1970's, after falling into such a state of disrepair, it was demolished.
