Article #2

Man versus nature?

If we just glance outside our window, most of us (including certainly Malta, and many European cities), would see an interesting combination of urban life and smog.

If we examine our daily needs, I’m sure that the list would include car, computer, and so on. Of course, we are amongst the lucky lot who would most probably not include food at the top of our list. This is not because we do not need to eat, but is rather due to the abundance of food available. I am in no doubt, that people in underdeveloped countries, would have a much shorter and less demanding list than we do.

None would put oxygen, the Amazon rainforests at the head of our lists. However, our entire life essentially boils down to our physical needs. Considering this, cutting down precious forests for the sake of ‘development’, seems incomprehensible. Yet, this is what man is doing right now. We have created wrong priorities and are paying the price for it. Of course, all of us would undeniably benefit from let’s say the setting up of a new factory, but being conscious of the choice between material goods and fresh instead of stale air to breath, which would you opt for ?

It would be too easy to blame large industries, countries and the like, for pollution. We can help in our homes, by for example using environmentally-friendly products, and by recycling goods. It might seem like a drop of water in a bucketful, but if all pull up our sleeves, we would soon be living in a healthier environment. It’s about time, that we realise that our life is at stake. Irreparable damage has already been done; however we can stop matters becoming worse. We can rethink our ideology : is it man for the environment, or man versus the environment ?
