Although Mary Church Terrell, born in 1863, had the advantages of being the daughter of the South's first Black millionaire and of attending Oberlin College, she dedicated her life to fighting injustice. She was one of the NAACP's first members; she helped establish the National Association of Colored Women in 1896, and she contributed in the fight to win Blacks the right to vote. When Terrell died in 1954, thousands of people paid tribute to this remarkable woman.
