Jacob Ammann appeared before the magistrates to declare that the Amish would not serve in the militia nor as town guards or public property custodians. Ammann had moved to this village a few years earlier to serve as elder of the local congregation.

The city authorities ordered the Amish to leave town. Many did so, but the local congregation continued to exist through the end of the century. The fate and whereabouts of Jacob Ammann after this date, however, are unknown.
