- After a 2-month examination by the Papal Inquisitor, Hans Becker was burned at the stake. According to his statements, he was converted in 1442 while praying in a church in Mainz. The Holy Spirit descended with a terrible noise, he said, seizing him so that he felt a great pain. After that time he believed that no one could be as illuminated as he was. He stopped going to confession and observing the fasts. During the elevation of the host in the Mainz Cathedral, the Spirit compelled him to stick out his tongue.
