Lubeck

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

1349

April 1349
The Flagellants arrived in Lubeck.

1402

A heretic named William was examined by the Dominican Inquisitor Eylard Schoenveld. William was a wandering preacher with a long brown beard who had arrived in town dressed in white robes. He said he was one of Christ's new apostles and supposedly confessed to 80 heretical articles. Schoenveld had William burned at the stake. Although Schoenveld referred to William as a "beghard", recent scholarship suggests he was either a Waldensian or just an independent megalomaniac.
