Macha

Crow; Battle; Great Queen of Phantoms

Macha is one of the aspects of the triple Morrighan. After battles, the Irish would cut the heads off the losers and call them Macha's Acorns. Macha came from the otherworld to marry Crunniuc mac Agnomain on the condition that he should not mention her to others. On hearing the King of Ulster boast about the speed of his horses, Crunniuc boasted that his wife could outrun them, so extraordinary were her powers. Although Macha was heavily pregnant, she was forced to race against the horses, beating them but falling into labour at the winning post. The circuit of the race became known as Emain Macha, today known as Armagh. As she died giving birth to twins, Macha cursed the Ulstermen with the ninefold curse by which they would suffer the pains of childbirth for five days and four nights for nine times nine generations when they were in their utmost need. Only women and boys were exempt from this curse. To Macha is attributed the building of the first hospital in Ireland.
