The Voice Of My Teachers Proverbs 5:13 I. Introduction. A. One who despises instruction is foolish: Proverbs 1:7. B. The Proverb writer wanted to teach his son: Proverbs 5:7. 1. Spoke of the evil woman and consequences of following her. 2. Fearful he would learn too late: Proverbs 5:13. C. How often does one believe that he must experience something(as evil) to be able to deal with it. II. Body. A. When one studies the messages of his father to his son, it is evident: 1.To learn--one must listen. a. Note: Hearken--Proverbs 7:24. b. "Hearken" appears almost 150 times in KJ. 2. To profit--one must obey. a. Hearing and listening from Bible standpoint involves heeding. b. Why preserve Bible if not true? c. God's book is not a novel or a book of pleasure: it is the message from the Lord! 3. To appreciate the past: one must learn from it. a. All of the lessons of the past are of no value unless they are applied. (1) Note: Abraham(Sarah). (2) ...and Isaac(Rebekkah). b. Recent or past--it is our source of knowledge. 4. To manage the present: one must remember the past. a. "Remember the days of old..." b. "How soon we forget!" 5. To live in the future, one must respect and acknowledge the lessons of the past. a. Becomes our foundation to build upon. b. Grants hope for the faithful: Hebrews 11:32-40. B. But--those who are my teachers--what voices shall I hear? 1. Those who have lived before(the past). a. Peter learned: Judas did not. b. David learned: Samuel's sons did not. 3. The experiences of others? a. Rehoboam("My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.") b. The kings of Judah and Israel. c. The brethren? C. Whose voice(as a teacher) should I reject? 1. The wicked? Proverbs 10:32. 2. The false teacher? I John 4:1. 3. The apostate?
