No Room For Giving Up Hebrews 10:19-25 I. Introduction. A. How easy it is for humans to give up or give in. 1. In many cases: nothing wrong. 2. In other instances: serious consequences. B. Humans give up or give in because: 1. Unhappy with circumstances. 2. Unhappy with others. 3. Unhappy with themselves. 4. Unhappy with situations. C. There are some actions and conduct it is proper to give up. 1. Immorality. 2. Unfaithfulness. 3. Sin in general. 4. Harmful habits. 5. Anything jeopardizing the soul. D. There are actions and conduct one should never give up. 1. Practice of righteousness. 2. The faith. 3. The desire to go to heaven. 4. The Lord. II. Body. Read Hebrews 10:19-25 A. The Lord made a way for us to live pleasing to him: v. 19-21. 1. Discuss his life, his trials, his death. 2. "Dedicated for us": sacrifice for you and for me. 3. Became our high priest: v. 21. a. We are in his house. b. Under his guidance and protection. 4. Surely--we would never give up on Christ: he did not give up on us! 5. Boldness: having confidence. 6. Note: II Corinthians 5:1. 7. What we should be: Romans 12:1-2. 8. "God provides a right way to a right end." 9. No room for giving up or giving in here. B. Draw near to God: v. 22. 1. Possessing a true heart. a. Clean and determined to serve the Lord(absence of guilt, deceit, and hypocrisy). b. One steadfast in faith. c. The heart must be in one's service. d. Faith is the power behind one's life. 2. Having a pure conscience. a. Undefiled by misgivings and uncertainties. b. Not seared--but tender and trained. c. Can I do it in good conscience? d. Purified by repentance and prayer. e. Comment on I John 3:19-22. 3. We were washed with pure water. a. Cleansing and purifying. b. Of Saul of Tarsus: Acts 22:16. 4. "I am not as close to God as I should be"--who moved? 5. No room for giving up or giving in here. C. Hold fast the confidence of our hope: v. 23. 1. Hold-without wavering(cling). 2. Eternal life is the goal. 3. We are to hold fast: a. "That which is good": I Thessalonians 5:21. b. "Pattern of sound words": II Timothy 1:13. c. "Our confession": Hebrews 4:14. d. Holding on to these gives us hope! 4. God(was) will be faithful: why should we not be faithful to Him? 5. Remember Revelation 2:10. 6. No room for giving up or giving in here. D. Have a mutual care for one another--excite each other: v. 24. 1. Do not live life of Christian alone(do not isolate from saints). 2. Time spent on assisting and helping others promotes an example of care. 3. Provoke: good word--stimulate. 4. Note: II Corinthians 9:1-2. 5. How does my life, my actions, my attitudes, etc.--stir up (provoke) others(doubts or assurances; questions or answers)? 6. Interest in others will help not only inspire them, but increase one's respect for others. 7. Expression: Faith, hope and charity. 8. Comment on I Corinthians 12:25-27. 9. No room for giving up or giving in here. E. Assembling together and exhorting one another: v. 25. 1. Needed this exhortation: day of trial at hand. 2. Faced destruction of Jerusalem? or end of life? or end of age? 3. Comment on "assembling"--"gathering together": not just one assembly. 4. Involves occasion for mutual edification. 5. The early church practiced: Acts 2:42, 46. 6. Some neglected this: Paul discouraged the habit(custom). 7. When one is neglectful of assembling--contributes to one becoming weak: need strength of other disciples. a. Not found in world. b. Consider exposure time to unbelievers. c. Miss the "exhorting." 8. The fellowship of Christians can never be underestimated. 9. No room for giving up or giving in here. III. Conclusion. A. The only course to avoid giving up and giving in is to: Philippians 3:13-14. B. The Lord did not give up on you: don't give up on Him.-jy.
