ANDREW Mark 1:16-18 I. Introduction. A. Not everyone can be a Paul, a Timothy, or Titus. B. Not everyone can be as aggressive and fiery as the apostle Peter. C. But almost everyone can be somewhat like Andrew. D. Andrew: Manly(mentioned 13 times). II. Body. A. The manly one. 1. Fisherman: Mark 1:16-18. 2. From Bethsiada(house of fishing): John 1:44. 3. An apostle: Matthew 10:2 4. Shared house with Simon: Mark 1:29. 5. Close to his brother. 6. Laid aside his fishing long enough to seek Lord. 7. Please note: a. Humble occupation(position in life). b. Busy at task. c. Saw something more important(they "left" their nets). B. Andrew was active in Christ's service. 1. Desired to know Christ's teaching: Mark 13:3-4. a. Lord had just said: v. 1-2. b. Naturally inquisitive. 2. Called Jesus attention to the boy who had 5 loaves and 2 fishes: John 6:8-9. a. Ready to help. b. Have an idea what would happen? 3. With Philip, tells of desire of Greeks: John 12:22. a. Drawing close to end of Jesus' ministry. b. Interest of Gentiles aroused. 4. With the apostles after resurrection: Acts 1:13. 5. Do not hear of him after this. C. Best remembered for the act of bringing his brother to the Lord: John 1:40-42. 1. Andrew made the greatest discovery one can make. a. Far greater than new continent. b. Far greater than precious minerals, stones, etc. c. Far greater than some healing substance. 2. Then he shared it with one closest to him!(Lesson: Convert family). a. Noah: While the world was lost, Noah's family was safe! b. Many times, the greatest opportunity exists within the family circle. 3. Andrew knew whom he could influence. 4. Please note: "He brought him unto Jesus." 5. But Andrew had to devote himself first. 6. Andrew is not prominently mentioned in the record, but he brought one to Lord whose impact is obvious.(Andrew wrote no letters, apparently did not preach "fiery" sermons, etc.- -but what he did lives in eternity). D. You can be an ANDREW. 1. Many more like this than like Simon Peter. 2. Teach: Neighbor, friend, relative(or bring them to be taught or arrange for someone to teach them). a. Growth centers on these kind of efforts. b. So many will not listen to TV programs, read newspaper articles, tracts, etc.--but they may listen to you! 3. Teach husband or wife. a. B. Snider: "I have already lead singing, Wednesday night short talk, Lord's table, lead prayers, etc. It makes me feel so good to be able to do so much"(5/78-- baptized 11/77: 6 months). b. Be a power for good together. 4. As a parent--teach child. a. Become preacher...elder...deacon...song leader...teacher ...or faithful Christian? b. Elder's wife...preacher's wife, etc. c. Or...like Andrew...or Peter? d. Where is the interest in your child's training? III. Conclusion. A. Be as Andrew!-jy
