The Deity of Christ Mark 1:11 I. Introduction. A. Jesus was human, but more than that--he was divine. 1. So acknowledged by Jehovah: Mark 1:11. 2. So claimed about himself: John 6:38. 3. So witnessed by the apostles: II Peter 1:16-18. 4. Men have challenged this claim since he walked upon the earth. 5. However, none can refute the evidence he left to show he was divine(God). B. Jesus existed in the beginning: Genesis 1:26. 1. Only one who is divine could ascend from heaven and return to heaven(with all authority). 2. Being divine, he could be(and is) the head of the church: Colossians 1:18. II. Body. Consider these arguments for the deity of Christ. A. Jesus was eternal in nature. 1. Note and comment: John 8:58. 2. Not a created being as some would claim. 3. One of the Godhead: Acts 17:29. 4. Said of him: Colossians 2:9. B. Christ is referred to as God: claimed to be divine. 1. Note and comment: John 10:36. 2. Follows since he is eternal. 3. Possessed all the attributes of God. 4. Allowed to become human to save those who would be saved. C. The Son of God possessed a perfect(complete) knowledge. 1. He could(and did) discuss the word with wise men at an early age. 2. Perfect recall of what had been revealed: the Master Teacher. 3. Appropriate answer for all questions. 4. Dumbfounded the Jewish leaders. 5. Nicodemus recognized: John 3:2. D. The powers he possessed prove Jesus to be divine. 1. Power over physical nature. a. Stopped the storm. b. Withered a tree. c. Fed five thousand with a boy's lunch. d. Hence: Matthew 8:27. e. And he walked on water. 2. Power of physical healing. a. Restored sight to a blind man. b. Put an ear on a soldier that had been cut off. c. Cleansed the leper. d. Healed Peter's mother-in-law. e. Note: Matthew 9:35. 3. Power over life and death. a. Man has limited power over death(can prevent). b. Raised Lazarus. c. Raised the widows' son. d. Gave that power to apostles(Paul raising young man). 4. Power to read minds. a. Even of the Scribes: Matthew 9:4. b. Of his disciples: Luke 24:38. c. What if Jesus had put this power in humans living today?(Some mothers do a good job of it.) 5. Power to predict the future. a. His own death and resurrection: Mark 8:31. b. Peter's denial. c. Judas' betrayal. 6. Power to forgive sins. a. Of the palsied man: Luke 5:20-24. b. The woman at the well. c. The woman taken in adultery. E. Jesus is: John 14:6. 1. Proved by his resurrection. 2. Makes possible: John 5:28-29. III. Conclusion. A. For us, he is: John 6:35. B.
