This is My page of Samhian Information
I will Include different information on all the
Different Beliefs that relate to Halloween in
one way or another
Samhian is the Pagan holiday that is
close to Halloween.
It is the celebration of the end of t he Harvest
and is believed to be the day that the veil between the
two worlds is at it's thinnest. Which means that the
sprits of the dead can more easily visit us in or
plane of existence than on any other day and we can also visit them.
Below are some examples of things done at a Samhian celebration
and information I have gathered in my research of Samhian.
Beware the Black Cat
The black Cat earned it status as a results of its connection to another
Halloween Icon.
Witchcraft and black magic were part of druid Samhian
Celebrations, end-of-Harvest Ceremonies which the living and
dead were thought to be closest together. It was believed that Samhian,
a Druid Lord of the dead, commanded spirits to take the form of animals
during these celebrations, with the most evil becoming a cat .Early
Settlers
to America brought their beliefs in witches ability to take different
forms,
including that of a cat. Black cats became know as a witches special
pet.
Out of this grew superstition that if a black cat crossed your path you
should
turn around and go back to avoid bad luck.
I got this from Halloween Celebrations issue of Woman's day Magazine
Side note from Catlinn
A woman was believed to be a witch if she lived alone and owned
any cats if she was able to perform any healing. And they not only
had to be black cats and in some countries a black cat crossing your
path was a good thing because it meant you should not
go out fishing today because there would be a storm.
Those Fisher Man stayed home and no one that ever saw a cats
and followed the superstition ever died or got hurt on those
days Just a tid-bit I thought should be thrown in for everyone
"s""
So not all superstitions are the same through out the world.
Trick or Treating In the Begin
The very familiar form of Trick or treating we now do today was not the
original
way things started. Of course most of use realize that but do you know
any folk
lore behind it ? I do "G". I will tell you what i have learned It
was as " All Souls Day"
by very early christians. On All souls Day christians would walk from
house
to house begging for soul cake( sweetbreads with currants) In exchange
for the Sweet bread beggars would say prayers for the deceased to
speed
their passage to heaven In Britain , People took to leaving stacks
of soul cakes
near their doors on Halloween for beggars to eat in exchange for prayers.
The Trick playing comes from many different
traditions including but not limited to the Druid rituals.
