Page 1. The World at War
The FAS site lists 94 nations directly involved in 155 wars or armed conflicts between 1940-2000 (not including WWII.)
As of Feb. 2003, the "History Guy" web site lists 25 current "major wars and conflicts" involving 36 nations directly, and others indirectly through the actions of the UN (191 nations) and NATO (19 nations).
This site also lists 31 current "minor wars and conflicts" involving 28 nations directly, and others indirectly through the actions of the UN and NATO.
Also listed are 22 "recently concluded or suspended wars and conflicts" (within the past ten years), involving 35 nations directly, plus the UN and NATO nations.
Also listed are 7 "major acts of terrorism" involving 10 nations directly.
Altogether, these current and recent wars and conflicts directly involve 76 separate nations, plus the UN (191 nations) and NATO (19 nations).
Definitions of "major" and "minor":
"Current Major wars and conflicts in the world . . . defined here as wars and conflicts in which more than a thousand people have died, involve more than one nation (for internal conflicts) or more than two nations (for international conflicts), and/or have the near-term potential to turn into a multi-national regional conflict."
"Current Minor wars and conflicts in the world Wars and conflicts, which are relatively small impact on the world or the region in which they occur. Placement on this list is somewhat subjective. For nations and individual people caught up in these conflicts, these wars are far from minor, but from the perspective of the world as a whole, they are possess a lower profile than the wars in the major category. This category also contains one-time occurrences such as the Korean border battles, which are part of a long-standing hostility. Generally speaking, these conflicts involve few than 1,000 deaths, involve only one nation (for internal conflicts) or only two nations (for international conflicts) and/or do not possess the likelihood of developing into multi-national regional conflicts.
"Recently concluded or suspended wars and conflicts in the worldWars and conflicts which, as of this pages latest update, are concluded due to a cease-fire, peace treaty or some other apparently permanent cessation of hostilities. Many of these conflicts can easily re-erupt into violence."
"Major Acts of Terrorism . . . [includes] major acts of terrorism from around the world. . . . Terrorist acts which are an integral part of a major conflict (such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict), generally will not appear here."
