Location: Right bank, adjacent to Forts Evegnée (left flank) and Fort Chaudfontaine (right flank)
Mission: Protect approaches to Liège
Configuration: Large triangular, type A2, B2, C2, D3
Bombardment of the Fort: Shelled on 5 August. Final bombardment started on 12 August at 0800 and lasted until the 14th at 0945, slowing on the nights of 12-13 and 13-14.
Condition of the Fort: Breech, 19 meters long, at counterscarp of gorge front, near salient III. Breech, 75 meters long, at counterscarp of the gorge, between salient III and entry postern. Breech in the escarp wall of the gorge near the right flanking battery. The counterscarp of front II-III damaged in several places. The walls of the escarp and the counterscarp of the gorge riddled with holes. The central massif was sliced along the edge to a depth of 1 to 1.25 meters and the surface of the massif heavily cratered. Bakery and kitchen caved in. Grills and masking wall of the infantry sortie demolished. Terreplein and parapets completely cratered.
Condition of the Guns: All cupolas out of commission. That of the 12cm was caved in. Others were dented in. 5.7cms in good condition, except for that of salient III, which was out of commission.
Morale of the Garrison: Remained good to the end.
Food and Supplies: Satisfactory. Makeshift kitchen and bakery set up.
Water: Still available.
Lighting: Good
Ventilation: Bad; air at the end was unbreatheable.
Latrines: Bad odors in the interior of the fort
Cause of Surrender: 14 August, 0945 hours. Serious damage to the concrete. All armament out of action. Surrender caused by gas and terrible odors from the latrines. The fort held out to its absolute limit.
