Fort Barchon

Location: Right bank, adjacent to River Meuse and Fort Evegnée

Mission: Command northern approaches; 9-mile gap between dutch border

Configuration: Large triangular, type A2, B2, C2, D3

Bombardment of the Fort: Received several shells on 4 August around 1130 and in the evening. Shelled sporadically on 5, 6, and 7 August, then more violently on the 8th.

Condition of the Fort: Central massif breeched in front of the 21cm cupola and along the front II-III to a depth of 1 meter. Breech around the 12cm. Minor damage between the cupolas. Minor damage in the escarp wall of the gorge front and the left flanking battery.

Condition of the Guns: One of the 12cm guns out of service; the 15cm turret was damaged but still turned; the collar of the 21cm was dented; that of the 15cm had 4 dents; the 12cm was dented - all with no grave effect. Only the 5.7cm of salient I was damaged. All the flanking batteries were intact.

Morale of the Garrison: Good until the moment when a dozen men were killed and 20 wounded on the parapets where they were repulsing a German assault. After that, morale was bad and there was the beginning of a mutiny.

Food and Supplies: Good; the meat was fresh

Water: Some of the conduits were obstructed, but there was still plenty of water available.

Lighting: Good, with the exception of 45 minutes.

Ventilation: Bad

Latrines: Good

Casualties: 10 killed, 20 wounded

Cause of Surrender: 8 August, 1630 hours. Surrendered because of bad morale. Neither damage to the fort, nor the condition of the armaments justified surrender.
