I'm not sure why you'd want to know any of this, but you clicked here, so the balls in your court, read on or go back.
I was born in Chula Vista, Californiaon September 15, 1967. I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where my family moved when I was two. I come from a large family, one older sister, Robin (now with six kids of her own), then me, then Patrick (who has a son), Dana (who has two kids), Kameron, and Nicolas (no kids that I know of!). In addition to this, my family kept foster kids, which basically means we always had, with the exception of maybe two or three times that I can remember in my life, anywhere from three to six babies around the house. There were about 165+ foster kids who'd gone through our home by the time I moved out. My mom still keeps kids. She's upwards of 200+ now. It's what she's good at. I, myself, have no children. Oh, I now live in Austin, Texas.
I am a writer. A non-paid, barely published writer. I had a few poems published a very long time ago, one in a magazine called Wide Open Magazine somewhere out in California, and five in The University of Texas / Pan American's literary magazine Gallery '90. I also had a flash fiction piece "Fear and Loathing in Los Baños" on the inaugural edition (October 2001) of the new web zine Flush Fiction Magazine.
I read a lot. I read mostly short stories and novellas now, since that's where my area of concentration is. I don't have a "favorite book" or "favorite author", per se, but here's a list of some of the ones that come to mind now. I'm sure that I'll change this: Joyce Carol Oates, T.C. Boyle, Rick Moody, Hemmingway, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Alice Munro, Leslie Mormon Silko, John Updike, Shakespeare (of course!), Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, and on and on and on….
My most recent and most enjoyable and intriguing in a long time was Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves. I absolutely could not put it down.
As for music, I listen to all sorts of things, when I listen at all. Most of the time I prefer silence, especially when I'm writing, I don't know why. I love music, I played music (trumpet, classical and jazz) for a long time, I almost majored in music originally, I just get distracted, I guess, when I'm writing. Some of my favorites are, in no particular order: Bach, Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sheherazade", etc.. I grew up listening to all the classic rock bands, Kiss, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Ozzy, etc. I also liked Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and T.S.O.L., the Sex Pistols, and the Dead Kennedy's. More recently, Dave Mathews Band, Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Sinead O'Connor, (no, I haven't turned gay). Others include, David Bowie, the Scabs (Bob Schneider's local band), Michael Hedges (incredible guitar), Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, the Chieftains, (I love Celtic music). My current favorite album (still can't call them disc, sorry) is Poe's Haunted. Poe is Mark Z. Danielewski's sister, and this album is based on and inspired by his book. Hell, this is too hard, and you probably don't give a damn anyway, so I quit.
I love a good bottle of wine. I make a kick-your-ass margarita. I'm also a big fan of Captain Morgan's Rum (I know, I drink like I'm in high school) and any good bourbon or whisky.
As for work, I have a full-time (7am-5pm-ish) job at a mortgage servicing company. If you don't know what that is, you're in the same boat I was in when I started. Basically, a servicing company buys or processes the loans that your mortgage company and bank produces. We collect the money, keep track of stuff, collections, etc. My job, as glamorous as this sounds, is quality control, which means that I sit at a computer all day verifying that the information in our computer systems matched up with what’s actually in the loan files. It's not as bad, or as boring, as it sounds. I work with a rather eclectic bunch of people and as long as I'm listening to some good tunes and have the right balance of caffeine in my system (coffee with chicory in the mornings, Coke and Red Bull in the afternoons), I do fine.
Okay, I'm rambling and I'd be really surprised if anyone is still reading this anyway, so I'll continue some other time...
P.S. I don't regret anything I've done unless I did it to you and you're mad, in which case, I'm really sorry! You'll find out other things I like, and some of my pet peeves by digging around the site. Don't take everything too seriously, I don't.
P.P.S. I don't really know what I'm doing on this site, but I try to make it entertaining.
All of the writings are mine unless otherwise noted. They are all copywrited by Steven J.D. Bean, please don't steal them!
If I stole pictures from your site, sorry. If you're really upset e-mail me and I'll take them off.
"Yet each man kills the thing he loves,
By each let this be heard
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!"
