I-35 Rest Stop, 2am

Lights glow red on the trailers
Lined up like so many toys.
The breeze smells of diesel

Uh, no thanks, I'm just resting.
(As the name implies.)

The blue van parked in front of me
Is shaking, bouncing, back and forth.
I remember bumper stickers from childhood-
'If this van starts a'rockin' don't come a'knockin''
Vans were cool then.

No, seriously, I'm not interested
I just want to rest.

The highway sounds different
Up close- sitting still.
The big trucks whine, tires whistling
Sixty-five doesn't look all that fast.

Look, goddamnit, I just want to be left alone!
Get the fuck away from my car!

Doors locked, windows up
Even the cool night grows stifling.
I watch the cop on the side of the road
Hopeful no one speeds by.
