It is not difficult to reach an intuitive awareness of the ideal of "purity of heart".
It is not difficult to see in our own lives the thoughts and actions which do not come up to this ideal, and to reach an intuitive awareness of the steps needed to obtain improvement.
It is not difficult to recognize in the activities of others and in the world at large whether or not this ideal has been sought, and to make our own decisions accordingly.
With purity of heart we do not need to carry a bunch of keys around, for those who would steal from us lose more than they gain, and they cannot steal that which is of the most value.
With purity of heart we do not need to fear personal violation, for those who would violate us are hurt more than we, and they cannot reach that area of us which is most precious.
Books, meditation methods, special diet, special breathing, special sex, all these things are undoubtedly important, but without purity of heart they will miss their intended target.
Purity of heart: this is the icon we can hold in the face of the devil and watch him wither away.
