E

EG - The true companion (Dutch: EchtGenoot) to whom the individual is pledged to support and remain faithful.

Eightfold Path - Buddha's recommendation which should not be ignored when seeking a path to Transition:

  1. Right Belief that deliverance from pain and evil can be found in abandoning egocentric preoccupations
  2. Right Will to deliver oneself and others
  3. Right Speech, directed by compassion and charity towards all sentient beings
  4. Right Action, aimed at maintaining peace and goodwill
  5. Right Means of Livelihood which benefits, without harming, other sentient beings
  6. Right Effort towards Self-Control
  7. Right Attention, to avoid thoughtless actions
  8. Right Contemplation, the unitive knowledge of the Ground

F

Family - The collection of people connected by blood- or EG-relationships who have a mutual responsibility to assist if possible, and not obstruct, each other's progress towards Transition.

Fasting - An occasional "liquid fast" has its place on the way to Transition - perhaps on a regular once- or twice-weekly basis, or 3 to 5 successive days in order to achieve a particular aim. Apart from the advantage to the digestive system and the exercise in self-discipline, there seems to be some relation between fasting and the working of the forces in the universe to favour your (ethical) aims.

Forgiveness - Unmistakably a virtue on the way to Transition. Look to those you find most difficult to forgive, and you will often discover that it is yourself that you cannot forgive, and by achieving this last forgiveness you will have taken an important step on your path.

Freedom - Used here in the sense of spiritual freedom, the ability to choose one's actions without being limited by inner obstacles. The pursuit of this freedom is an important objective which can give recognizable results. Compare Truth. Piers' freedoms are as follows:

G

Garden - An example of cooperation between one or more human beings and the Creator, to some aesthetic end.

God -

Group - The collection of people to whom the individual has assumed a responsibility to assist their progress towards Transition.

Guide - A (personal or spiritual) source of information and insight to help an individual on his/her path to Transition. Compare Guru.

Guru - An individual who requires the subservience of disciples in order to continue on his/her own path to Transition, without regard for the ultimate interests of the disciples. Compare Guide.

H

Harmony - In the vision of Piers the Universe is striving towards some celestial harmony, and our personal goals should also be connected with living in harmony with ourselves, our partner, our group and all sentient beings.

Healing - Only recently recovering from the use of the automobile as a model, where replacement of parts, maintenance and tuning were the cure for all ills. Fortunately a more holistic approach is increasingly prevalent.

Heaven - According to authoritarian religions something to be experienced in the future, whereas in fact it is a timeless state of unitive knowledge of the divine Ground.

Hobby - An activity undertaken in order to be able to mention it in one's curriculum vitae. See also work.

Housekeeper - A device adopted by the priesthood to fill the gaps caused by the vow to remain unmarried. Unlike a wife, a housekeeper can be dismissed provided the appropriate notice is given, and replaced by a more efficient provider of the various services.
