When is the dawn?

This story is translated from a piece we received from the Dutch evangelical broadcasting service.

An old rabbi once asked a group of students how you determined the time when night ends and day begins.
"Is that when you can distinguish a dog from a sheep in the distance?" asked one.
"No", answered the rabbi.
"Or when you can tell a date tree from a fig tree in the distance?" asked another.
"No", answered the rabbi again.
"What, then? Tell us!"
"When you can look into the eyes of any other human being and recognize your brother or sister. That's when the dawn breaks - before that it is still night!"
