American Wilderness Landscapes

The Hudson River School of Art was founded by Thomas Cole in 1825 and lasted through the 1870s. Focusing on the images of American Wilderness, Hudson River School artists including Asher B. Durand, Frederic Church, and Albert Bierstadt captured the imagination of Americans with their idealized landscape portraits. Contrasting the wilderness ideal with diminutive human presence, this school popularized the movement towards Western Expansion and Manifest Destiny.
