To a Friend

by Amanda Proctor (15)

I cannot be mad at you for leaving.
Because I know you are happy now.
In the place where you belong,
With the angels, smiling down at us.

Of course I am upset but in my heart I'm glad,
You are finally receiving your rewards,
For all the good deeds, you unselfishly have done.
Maybe you'll gaze down at me, sometime.

Upon hearing the news, I burst into tears.
Looking back fondly on brief memories
Your kindness, your goodness, your love,
Every wonderful quality shines through, my friend.

Thinking of you lying, on the cold kitchen floor,
Brings tears to my already brimming eyes.
You died peacefully, I hear, a comfort.
While making lunch around noontime.

O devoted servant that you are,
O loving mother, O faithful wife,
O diligent friend, my friend.
How happy you must be now.

My friend, my Sunday school teacher, my idol,
About three times my little age,
Yet too young to die.
Alas your poor heart, your loving heart

Those heart problems overtook you,
Your pacemaker stopped clicking out of breath.
Only my Sunday school teacher, but somehow my friend.
See you in heaven soon, my good friend.
