Dream Life

by Amanda Proctor (15)

Often I have wondered,
If life were all a dream,
And I am still an infant asleep,
In my crib.

Sometimes what a blessing,
That would be,
As to avoid mistakes,
Made carelessly now.

And I think to myself,
Exhausting my mind,
How possible this could be!
A second chance to begin,

Fresh. Yes, and of course,
I would remember my faults,
And try to avoid them.
When the lights dim,

And I lay down quietly,
On my bed, and close my eyes.
I dream that possibly soon,
When I awake, I will hear,

The sounds of a gurgling baby.
Me! I will again be innocent,
And people will say what a good child.
For I will remember, and behave well.

Soon I will be put down for a nap,
And close my eyes peacefully,
Then when I awake I am old,
Again. It was all a dream.

Yet how I wish it was not,
So I could once again live,
But live rightly. Alas,
I am awake, older, and not dreaming.
