At a time today, a girl was quite happy,
A person she knows has come to call it carefree.
Yet she sits here solemnly now, pondering,
Whether it is safe to be carefree.
There are things about the world,
That a young girl knowest not of.
Vaguely they appear before her eyes,
And she acknowledges their presence, but heeds them not.
For this naive, little girl still dreams peacefully,
About a world where people are good.
Someone tried to show her that is not true;
Deep down she knows this is right, but does not hear.
This person has seen the world's meanness in their life.
They try to tell her of their woes,
But the girl closes her ears and begs the friend to stop.
At this her friend is hurt, but so is she.
Her friends problems were a burden to her it seemed,
Though maybe they were there to shed a light,
On the truth of a cruel world she did not know.
Her hopes of kindness shattered, but selfishly she forgot her friend.
The friend had experienced more pain than she would ever confront.
An angry, selfish girl forgot how in a world of cruelty,
Friendship shines a light upon the good,
And though the world's bad, it is sometimes capable of kindness.
It is late now, and the girl is tired,
But she cannot sleep for the world to her is dead.
A long time ago she knew this to be true.
Now she remembers her friend and cries.
What cruel things she had said to her friend,
Proving that her friend was right about the world.
She cries again, at the thought of her friend.
A lesson learned well, but too late.
The young, naive, little girl now sees past the sugar-coating.
One small step, for a huge price to pay.
She now again wonders of being carefree, and she has an answer,
To be carefree you must not see cruelty, in the world, in people, as the girl saw today in herself.
