Susan's Page

Hello, my name is Susan. Gimme dollar!

Susan Gay Steckler- January 1994

Yup, I'm Susan Gay Steckler. I have Down Syndrome. Dewie is my legal guardian. That means she gets to boss me around! Really, she helps me do things and go places and have fun. I lived with dewie for seven years and we went through lots of ups & downs together. I now live with an adult foster provider and her family, but dewie still looks in on me from time to time and we get to visit and take trips together. She also takes care of my money for me... darn it!

You see, with my Down Syndrome, I can only think and act how you might expect a two or three year old to understand and behave. I also have obsessive/compulsive and anxiety disorders, which can really make me act weird sometimes. If you want to find out more about Down Syndrome, click here.

Dewie and I have gone on trips to the Oregon coast, to "Batana" (Montana) when her Mom & Dad lived there, and to "Angela" (Port Angeles WA) where Mom & Dad live now. I like to go shopping for postcards and t-shirts whenever we go some place. Dewie tries to make sure I only buy one of each picture post card. She also makes sure that all my money is in one dollar bills. That is so I don't think the cashiers are giving me more money when I get change back from a larger bill. I have this bad habit of asking cashiers, waitresses & people I know for dollars. Dewie keeps telling me that is not polite, but I love those little green pieces of paper & those people always seem to have drawers or pockets full of them. Going on vacations is so much fun that I can really put up a fuss when it's time to head for home.

I spend my weekdays at OIB. It's an employment & alternative to employment agency. I work on the production floor packaging coolant parts. At least, that is what I am supposed to do. I really spend most of my time fiddling with my work station supplies and keeping my eye on what's going on around me. When I do get my work finished completely, I get to have a coke in the afternoon before heading home. Boy, do I get upset when I don't get that coke! I get a paycheck every month. Dewie and I go to the bank and cash it. After I have my dollars, I like to hold onto them. I'd much rather have someone else spend their money on me. I can be convinced to use my dollars bills to pay for my meals at restaurants or for new clothes that I really want.

My birthday is on February 21st. I love my birthday and holidays, too. I would like every day to be one or the other. It's fun to get cards and presents. I can't read what the card says, so I just open it up quickly to see if there is a dollar bill in it. I mean, what's a card without a dollar in it? The kinds of presents I like to get are cloths, decks of cards, crayons & magic markers, candy & other goodies, little storage boxes & tins, and lots of socks. You can NEVER have too many socks... or tops or pants! I have so many clothes that every spring and fall, dewie and I have to go through my wardrobe and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. We donate the clothes I don't want to the ARC to help them make money to provide more services to people with developmental disabilities, like me.
