Arctic People

The Eskimos / Inuit

The people who live near the Arctic Ocean are sometimes call Eskimos.  This word came from the Cree Indians of North Canada and it means "eaters of raw meat."  But the name the people of the Arctic gives themselves is "Inuit" which simply means "the people."

The boy in the picture you see here is from the Arctic.  As you can see, Joey isn't wearing a sealskin coat and he probably doesn't live in an igloo.  Most modern Inuit live in homes like other people around the world.  A lot of the stuff I've written here is about the traditional Inuit.  I'm sorry if some of my information isn't true about them today.

 Their Clothing

The clothing the Inuit wear are warm coats called Parkas made out of Animal skin with double - decked pants(sorry) with a huge hood. They also have light water boots. These kids playing in the snow and ice near the Bearing Sea are wearing modern winter clothes.

The Inuit have brown skin, round faces and Asian looking eyes.  Inuit men are very muscular and don't have very much facial hair. They almost always have type B blood, which causes most people to believe that the Inuit come an Asian background.

Where do they live?

Most Eskimos live in little domes called igloos. They are made of blocks of ice and snow with wooden boards to help keep it stable. There is a hole at the top to help the smoke go out.  Not all Eskimos live in igloos.  Some live in tents like native American Indians.

What do they eat?

Eskimos eat fish and other Arctic game, but do not get many crops because of the snowy weather.

How do they travel?

The Eskimos use snow mobiles, dog sleads and boats to travel.  They use these things because of the ice and snow.  The sled dogs are mostly breads of Siberean Huskeys and other thick coated dogs.  Snow mobiles are similar to jet skiis, with snow skiis on the bottom of them.

What do they believe?

Their main belief is Anamism.  Anamism is a belief where everthing is spiritual like sticks and stones, water, animals etc. The goal of the religion is to keep peace between man and nature.

What languages do they speak?

The  people of the arctic speak a language called Inuktitut.  It is a very hard language to speak because there are many different versions of it.  Many Eskimos also speak English because they live in Alaska and Canada.
