Arctic Wildlife

There are lots of different kinds of sea animals in the Arctic.

The Artic fox, whose scientific name is Alopex  lagopus, is one of the many animals that roam the arctic lands.  The Eskimos hunts for the Arctic Fox for its beautiful white fur which is what protects it from its predators.
The polar bear,  also known as the snow bear, can weigh up to 990 lbs. (450 kg.). Its white fur helps to protect it from predators and helps it catch its prey.  The polar bears favorite food is a fat juicy seal. It has its cubs in a nine month period, just like humans do.
Another arctic sea animal is the Narwhal.  It is a big whale with a long spear like a unicorn's at the top of its snout.  Just like a dolphin or a whale, the Narwhal is a mammal.  The spear coming out of its nose is a canine tooth.

(Sorry, I don't have a picture,
I couldn't get my Narwhal to stay still.)

One of the animals in the Arctic is the Seal.  They are usually nice animals.  When their crawling across the ice they look very clumbsy. Once they get in the water, they are expert swimmers.

Finally, the Caribou, otherwise known as the reindeer, also lives in the Arctic Region. The color of the caribou's fur changes every season.  They travel in small herds to find food.  They go south in the winter and north in the summer.  One breed of caribou, which lives in northern Greenland, has snowy white fur.  In the Laplands people use caribou for dragging sleds, for meat and for making clothing.
