The Warm Glow

We want the warm glow,
the blush of satisfaction at our enemy’s folly,
we knew he would fall, knew his handicap,
followed his limp down every twisted pathway.

innuendo twined itself round our ears and judgment
escaped considerate justice till we saw his fall
and knew that we knew

We didn’t laugh, we even randomly cried our sorrow
at the scourge, the shame, the blush on our family
our church
our nation
our sterling reputation
but we still felt the warm glow
when he was brought low and never wondered

why the same blood that causes the blush of shame in his face
causes such satisfaction in ours
