Listing of Traditional Masses Which Have Been Approved under
Papal Authority.
-- REPUBLIC OF INDIA
--
There are no indult latin masses in the Republic, which is the cultural home of the
Syro-Malabarese Use of the Chaldean Rite and the Malankarese Use of the Antiochene Rite
and will be listed according to the divisions of all the rites present there and not just
the Roman one.
The Syro-Malabarese Use and the Malankarese Use are both to be found mainly on the
south-west coast of India and are descended from Christian colonies which have been there
as least from the fourth century and probably right back to the first century when,
according to Sacred Tradition, St. Thomas the Apostle evangelized part of the area and was
martyred on the south-east coast of India. The Malankarese Catholics are historically and
liturgically related to the 'Jacobite' ('Monophysite') Syrian Orthodox Church (not in
communion with the Orthodox Communion which recognizes the cumenical Patriarchate of
Constantinople), which also has a sister-Church in India. The Syro-Malabarese Catholics of
the Chaldean Rite are historically and liturgically related to the 'Nestorian' Assyrian
Church of the East, which is not in communion with the Monophysite or Orthodox Churches;
it also has a sister-Church in India.
Until more information becomes available to the site moderator, there will be no
listing of Eastern Catholic masses in India. Following is a list of Eastern Catholic
