When are we going to stop scapegoating people for all the ills of society? Wilford Berry, scheduled to be executed March 3 in Ohio, is a mentally ill man who was not capable of assisting in his own defense. He had no process of appeals because he refused them. How can we in good conscience put this man to death? We must ask ourselves why it is that those who are executed by the state are the poorest, most defenseless among us. Certainly they are not the only ones guilty of the evil deeds that tear at the fabric of our society.

The cycle of violence must end. There must be a better way. At the very least, we must let Ohio Gov. George Voinovich know that if this execution takes place, it does not represent the wishes of all the people in Ohio.
