'Desperation' | 'The Regulators' | 'The Stainless Steel Rat Goes To Hell' | 'Apprentice Adept' series |
Genre: fantasy/horror
Basic premise: A family encounters strange happenings and evil goings-on in a small mining town in Nevada.
Review: Wonderful book! Stephen King at his best is one of the premier horror writers of our time, and 'Desperation' is close to his best. A "pick-it-up-and-don't-put-it-down" winner that will have you turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning.

My opinion: Get this book, pop up some popcorn and enjoy yourself.
'The Regulators' by Richard Bachman
Genre: fantasy/horror
Basic premise: A neighborhood in a small town in Ohio has to deal with an outbreak of unexplained violence and insanity.
Review: Bachman is Stephen King's alter ego and uses the same characters King uses in 'Desperation', but with far less grace, style and finesse.
Rating: *
My opinion: Unless you are truly desperate for something to read, and have finished the backs of all your cereal boxes, don't bother.
'The Stainless Steel Rat Goes To Hell' by Harry Harrison
Genre: Science Fiction
Basic Premise: Jim diGriz and his family of inter-universal thieves work to bring down a temple offering peeks of Heaven--for a price.
Review: As with all of the previous Stainless Steel Rat books, Jim diGriz and his family are in the midst of an adventure of epic proportions. Written with tongue firmly in cheek, Harrison rescues his favorite family time and again.

My opinion: If you are looking for a comedy/adventure with lots of giggles and grins, pick up a Stainless Steel Rat.
'Apprentice Adept' series by Piers Anthony
Genre: fantasy
Basic premise: This is a series of 7 books (so far) about two parallel worlds. Proton, where science is the only way of doing things, and Phaze, where magic is king. The two interact for one special man and his family--leading to exciting times.
Review: Very readable fantasy. They tend to run together if you read them one-after-another (as I just did).

My opinion: Although not my ab fab of Piers Anthonys' work, this is a good way to kill a weekend.
