Discipline
    We believe all students can behave appropriately while at school and on the buses. We will  allow no student to stop the teacher from teaching or prevent other students from learning.  Each classroom establishes rules, rewards, and consequences. There are also guidelines for  out-of-class behavior: in the halls, restrooms, cafeteria, Library /Media Center, car line, buses, assemblies, and on the playground.

    The choice of behavior belongs to the student. Appropriate behavior will be rewarded;
inappropriate behavior will be handled according to the degree of infraction and in accordance with the  Wilkes County Board of Education’s Discipline Policy. A copy of this policy will be sent to you. Please  read it and outline the major areas of offenses with your child. This includes the Weapons Policy also. It is important that everyone understands the rules of student conduct, respects students’ rights, and utilizes the due process procedures for student discipline as outlined in the policy to enhance the quality of education in Wilkes County.

GENERAL SCHOOL-WIDE
DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES

—Follow directions the first time they are given

—Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself at all times

—Walk at all times

—No name calling, cursing, or negative teasing

—No fighting

—Respect the property of others

Students who do not follow the general guidelines outside their classroom will be corrected  immediately by the observing staff member. Students are expected to respond with respect, referring to the  first guideline. All of the adult employees of North Wilkesboro School have certain responsibilities to the  school; and in order to carry out these responsibilities, they have certain authority to correct students when the need arises. If any student is corrected by any adult employee, whether the employee is faculty, clerical, cafeteria, custodial, or bus driver, the student is expected to accept and respond in a respectful manner.

CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

    The Staff of North Carolina and the Wilkes County Board of Education grant the right of corporal  punishment to the principal, assistant principal, and teachers. This form of punishment is used sparingly.  If a child does something to hurt another child, destroys property of any sort, or misbehaves to the point of belligerence or arrogance, this punishment may be used. You will be notified if your child receives corporal punishment.

DRESS CODE

    Students should at all times dress in a socially acceptable manner that is appropriate for the occasion. Proper grooming, dress, and cleanliness are a definite and important part of our education  system. Because of safety or health hazards, shoes must be worn at all times. Oversized pants that reveal students’ under garments are not considered appropriate dress. Hats are not to be worn inside the building!
