Zen Garden Koan # 31
Garbage
Mummu was lecturing to a group of students. He pointed to a pile of
twigs and garbage, and asked if the pile had Buddha nature.
A monk spoke up and said, "No, Master. It is a random and chaotic
pile, with no order, no peace, no simplicity. It is about as far
from Zen as one can represent."
And Mummu replied, "You are incorrect. The further from Zen the pile
is, the closer it is to achieving true grace and Buddha nature.
Meditate further upon this lesson and you will come closer to
acheiving not-Zen."
