Zen Garden Koan # 17
Cuban Leaves
The Air blows a leaf to places that leaves have
never ever been.
The Earth enfolds the leaf in her arms, adding the
substance of the leaf to herself.
The Water carries the leaf. Moves it. Transports
it to new places.
The Fire transforms the leaf into its most basic
of substances.
The leaf, however, is still a leaf.
Negative energy turns a leaf into a branch.
Negating our intelligence turns the branch into a
stone.
And fear turns the stone into a boulder, which
cannot be moved.
But I still cannot tell where the leaves are going to
fall.
