Zen Garden Koan # 13

The Play's the Thing

Mummu and a monk were walking down the street when they encountered a young boy at play. All of a sudden, the boy fell and immediately began to cry for his mother. Mummu said, "That child lacks Buddha nature. He is not at peace, even though he brought his fate unto himself. He is not at one with the universe, as he seeks the help of others."
The monk replied, "But Master, the child knows what he seeks, he knows that it will bring peace and therefore takes comfort in the attempt. Is this not what we seek?"
And Mummu replied, "Very good! You think for yourself, you speak the truth and you are, indeed, well along the path to Enlightenment."
