ILLNESS QUESTIONS – 6th HOUSE

Illness questions are best answered by using an Illness Chart set for the time the patient first felt sick enough to go to bed and lie down. This is also known as the First Decumbiture or the First Lying Down. The invention of the First Decumbiture as an astrological tool for analysis of illnesses is based on the work of the Greek physician Hippocrates who lived about the year 400 BC. He also postulated the four humours to reflect the four elements in astrology. These mythical fluids determined personality and health by their balance or imbalance. Choler or yellow bile equalled Fire, melancholy or black bile equalled Earth, sanguine or blood equalled Air, and phlegm equalled Water. The use of the humours was discontinued with the discovery that bacteria, viruses and yeasts cause most disease.

The 1st house rules the patient’s physical health or physical condition in general, and the ruler of the 1st in a sign contrary to its own nature, in detriment or fall and under hard aspect will cause illness according to the nature of the sign it is in. Mars in Scorpio is NOT happy despite the fact it is in dignity. Mars is hot and dry, Scorpio is cold and wet, so Mars Scorpio is likely to indicate illness. Look to the planet making a hard aspect or to the dispositor of the ruler of the 1st and the sign it is in for an indication of the illness. The 6th house rules disease and illness and anything that could damage his health. Planets in the 6th are crucial since they damage your health according to the body parts or functions that they rule and especially the sign that they are in. The 6th is the house of disease and distress, and the ruler of the 6th may carry the illness to the part of the body indicated by the Sign and House it is in. Look at planets in the 6th, the sign they are in and the houses that they rule for clues to the illness. The ruler of the 1st determines the patient’s physical strength and condition and resistance to disease. Look at the 1st house and what planets it contains, and then the same for the 6th house, and make note what planets aspect these planets and from which houses, and which houses these aspecting planets rule. Look at the sign that the Moon is in, since it is always the coruler of the 1st, what planet it aspects, which house that planet is in and what house that planet rules. The 6th house rules the illness, and the 7th rules doctors, physicians, surgeons or anaesthetists. The 10th house of medical treatment also rules surgery and the surgery will be successful if the ruler of the surgery 10th is in good aspect to the ruler of the patient 1st. The 10th house rules all medical treatment, drugs, chemotherapy or surgery initiated by the doctor. The hard aspects such as conjunction, square and opposition show how severe the illness is. Saturn is chronic and serious; Mars is contagious and inflammatory; Mercury is respiratory; the Sun is hereditary, and Uranus is incurable.

The Sun rules the patient’s constitution and vitality, and any planets conjunct or combust the Sun have their own physical function damaged, as well as damaging the general health and vitality ruled by the Sun. The damage is minor if the planet or the Sun is in the sign of its dignity or exaltation, and serious if in detriment or fall, and worst of all when peregrine. A similar situation is a planet under the Sunbeams, or within 17 degrees of the Sun. This is a less severe situation than the combustion but still needs to be taken into serious consideration. The only planet conjunct the Sun that can gain strength from its position is Mars, which can make the Sun even stronger as long as a third and cooler planet moderates the heat of Mars. Otherwise, this conjunction indicates a very high and sudden fever caused by serious infection or poisoning of the blood. This either kills or cures the patient. The ruler of the 1st combust the Sun indicates a life-threatening illness and a short life. If the ruler of the 6th and the ruler of the 1st are strong by sign and in applying easy aspect, then the patient recovers easily. If the rulers are in detriment by sign and in applying hard aspect, then the problems are severe and the patient may die. The w is also very important, since the transiting aspects of the w determine the progress of the illness and the w always corules the person. The hard aspects of the transiting w to its own position in the Illness Chart will give the times of crisis. The semisquares, squares, sesquiquadrates and oppositions all indicate days of crisis in a lengthy illness. If a time for the First Lying Down cannot be had, then see if a time can be obtained for the first visit to the doctor, or when the first sample was taken (urine, blood, saliva, stool). Do a chart for this time and analyse it. A natal chart is also valuable, and transits, progressions and directions to the natal chart often reveal the trigger for the current illness. Planets in critical degree indicate the likelihood of crises in the natal or illness chart, and need to be taken into consideration. The planets in the Illness Chart are best understood by looking at their function in astrological weather forecasting.

What Part of the Body is Affected by the Illness?
If the 1st house is affected by the presence of a malefic planet and that planet is retrograde, combust, or peregrine, slow in motion, or " # to any planet in the misfortunate 4th, 6th, or 8th, or 12th then the disease is in the head or in the part of the body that the planets in the ascending sign indicate. If the ascending sign is Cancer with Saturn in the 1st, then you may be sure that the sick person is affected in the head, or has such a disease that is common in the head. The 1st house indicates a person’s head, and it is now affected by Saturn in that house.
Saturn in Cancer also indicates diarrhoea or looseness of the bowels, problems with the kidneys or sex organs, or trouble with an upset stomach or a severe cough. The indications are more reliable if either the ruler of the 1st, the Moon or the ruler of the 6th is in a sign that indicates the same body part as Saturn, or if the sign on the 6th represents that same body part. Analyse the 6th house in the same manner as the 1st. Look at the sign on the 6th house cusp, the ruler of the 6th, planets in the 6th, and what body part they all represent by sign and house. Look at the ruler of the 6th and see from which planet it has last separated and to which planet it next applies. Also look at the sign and house of the Moon, its separation or application to other planets, and the ruler of the house of the Moon. Then carry on with an analysis as to what part of the body is affected, what the nature of the illness is, and what body functions are predominantly affected. If the significators are in Fire Signs, and the ascending signs and the sign on the cusp of the 6th are of the same nature, then they indicate tuberculosis, high fevers and inflammations and infections of various kinds. If the significators are in Earth Signs, this indicates illnesses characterized by successive fevers and chills such as malaria, or other fevers of long duration, kidney disease and wasting illnesses of all kinds. In Air Signs, the significators indicate such diseases as infected blood, gout, leprosy, and arthritis. If the significators are in Water Signs, the illness derives from a cold or damp condition, leading to whooping cough, tuberculosis or stomach ailments.

The Diseases of the Planets

The passive planets Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, when in or ruling the 6th house or afflicting the ruler of the 1st or 6th, indicate an illness that is long drawn out. If it is permitted to continue then it is likely to become chronic, as in a serious disease or a self-indulgent habit that is contrary to common sense. The active planets such as Mars, Uranus and sometimes the Sun indicate an illness that is acute while it lasts, generally leaving a mark, scar or burn. The ability of Mars and the Sun to run a high fever, and of Uranus to take the opposite direction is frequently self-healing. Mercury and the Moon indicate petty ills as a rule, mental or emotional upsets, tantrums, or sicknesses that are common or going around. These are more readily responsive to home remedies.

The in or ruling the 1st or 6th or afflicting their rulers or a Malefic in those houses indicates an extreme malfunction, particularly of the whole body if it is also combust or in hard aspect to the Sun. There will be congenital disorders, or a systemic disorder resulting from some prevailing epidemic of a common, less serious disease. The Moon in or reaching a critical degree shows where the main crisis lies, and in an Illness Chart the Moon's hard aspects to its position in the chart are times of crisis in the illness. In any aspect at all to Mars, the Moon indicates that there will be an operation in the case. Illnesses from emotional stress and digestive or stomach disorders such as dyspepsia are common, and the Moon rules the nutritive chyle in the small intestine. rules natural vitality and strength and indicates constitutional, organic problems such mental unrest, clouded vision, burning or severely upsetting symptoms, and symptoms reflected from the planets it aspects unfavourably, especially Saturn. The Sun’s constitutional involvement becomes chronic, long drawn out and never entirely problem free. Neptune hard aspects indicate neurotic and hysterical behaviour and the wasting away of body tissues. If Mercury afflicts the Sun, disregard the prescribed treatment. With a Venus or Jupiter hard aspect, over indulgence leads to obesity and diabetes, circulatory problems, heart problems, sexually transmitted diseases, and circulatory problems. Impurities in the blood may lead to thickening and clots dangerous to the heart and brain. Combustion or conjunctions of the Sun with any planet leads to illnesses ruled by that planet, and even Mars can cause recurring high fevers unless moderated by the influence of a 3rd and cooler planet. Sun hard aspects or combustion can also indicate blood circulation problems. It rules irregularities or loss of control or coordination of the muscles such as ataxia, and disruptions such as stroke. Uranus rules the lower legs, ankles and calves. Uranus also rules accidental and unforeseen developments that disrupt the existing status so that the illness may unpredictably get better or worse on its own. It causes great annoyance and upset and it rules spasmodic or recurring illnesses. Uranus rules sudden and recurring problems, which are likely to be incurable. Uranus is a Malefic and if it is conjunct the ruler of the ascendant or the ruler of the 6th then it separates the planet from its bodily function and causes illness.

rules wasting illnesses, abnormal conditions, baffling symptoms that are hard to diagnose and may be groundless. It rules comatose conditions, fainting, suffocating or choking, stupefaction, torpor, and unconsciousness or poisoning from drugs, medicines or anesthetics. In surgery charts, Neptune indicates by closest aspect the kind of anesthetic used. Neptune also rules yeast infections and a need for vegetarian foods. Neptune aspects reduce the function of the affected organ or process. Neptune dynamic aspects often indicate periods of drug or alcohol abuse, narcotics, or erroneous prescription of medicines. Neptune can also trigger diseases and obsessions with its dynamic aspects. It can cause the misdiagnosis of problems, or inappropriate treatment. Neptune also rules anemia and white blood cells, and people who have a natal Neptune aspect to the angles are often vegetarians. They subsequently suffer from  anemia because of a lack of iron from red meat in their diet.

acts very similarly to Mars, with the additional complexity of being hidden or underground. Pluto rules problems that remain hidden until they are very far advanced and often irreversibly deadly. Pluto in most cases may be treated similarly to Mars. Pluto in the 6th prevents the absorption of normal amounts of iron, therefore a diet rich in red meat is needed. Life-long allergies or asthma are common with Pluto as a significator. Pluto also rules prostate gland enlargements or cancer, and the painful urination caused by restriction or blockage of the urethra. Pluto rules the bladder and the urethra, and infections such as cystitis. It also rules the groin and its injuries, as well as the testicles and their diseases. LILLY'S RULES FOR DIAGNOSING ILLNESS

1. In questions concerning sick people, take the ascendant and its rulers as significators of the sick person.

2. The sign on the 6th house cusp, its ruler and planets in the 6th, and the house and sign of the Moon, and the aspects to the ascendant indicate the disease or body part afflicted. Any planet combust the Sun is a serious affliction, with the bodily function of that planet greatly affected.

3. The 7th house represents the doctor and the 10th his medicine. If the ruler of the 7th is unfortunately placed, then the doctor will not find a cure. If the 10th house or its ruler is badly aspected, then his treatment is inappropriate and ineffective.

4. The 4th house indicates the end of the illness, and whether it will end quickly or continue for a long time. Fixed signs prolong the illness, Mutable signs make for variable symptoms, and Cardinal signs indicate a quick end to the illness one way or another.

5. If the doctor first visits the patient in the hour of Saturn, he will find that the patient will be sick for a long time or he will be a long time until he gets well. The patient will suffer a great deal of pain, nor will he be cured or get better until both the patient and doctor almost despair.

6. A doctor who begins treatment in the hour of Mars will find that his patient dislikes him, disdaining his treatment and rejecting his medicines. His efforts will not be rewarded, and his reputation will be disparaged.

7. The doctor who first visits the patient in the hour of Jupiter or Venus will have kind words for the sick and be well paid for his efforts. Even if the doctor fails to cure his patient, he will not be blamed for his failure and he will still be held in high esteem.

8. When a urine sample is analyzed, let the ascendant represent the sick person, whether the person asking the question comes to the astrologer with the patient's consent or not.

9. If no sample is analyzed by the physician then let the ascendant represent the person asking the question. The sick person and his illness must be represented according to the relationship he has with the patient. If a man asks about his servant, then the 6th house does not represent his disease, but the person of the servant. His illness is the 6th house of the 6th house, which is the 11th, using the 6th house cusp as the 1st.

10. In every chart concerning illness, carefully look at the Moon, for the Moon is the general significator of all diseases and the coruler of everything.

11. The sick person is in great danger of death when both the Sun and Moon are below the horizon in the Illness Chart.

12. Since there is no light in the world without the Sun and the Moon, so there is no hope of recovery when they are located below the horizon in the Illness Chart. If either of them are afflicted, then there is even greater danger of death.

13. The square or opposition to the Benefics may not destroy, and nor does the trine or sextile to the Malefics help a great deal, unless that aspect has reception with another planet.

14. If the Sun and the Moon or the ruler of the ascendant are free from affliction and have no aspects to the ruler of the 8th, then without doubt the sick person will recover. If two of his significators are well placed, then he will get well. If not, then he will die.

15. If the ruler of the ascendant is in its fall or detriment, unfortunate or combust, then it is very likely that the sick person will die of his illness.

16. When the planetary significator of the sick person is weak, and the ruler of the 8th is strong and afflicting the significator, then there is reason to fear that the sick person will die of his illness, since his own constitution is weak and the disease is strong.

17. If the ruler of the ascendant is in the 8th, and is in reception with the ruler of the 8th by some essential dignity, and even though the ruler of the ascendant is not in mutual reception, the sick person recovers unexpectedly.

18. The physician may have reason to fear for his patient when the ruler of the ascendant and the Moon both apply by hard aspect to a planet below the horizon. The reverse can be expected if they both apply by easy aspect to a planet above the horizon.

19. If the ruler of the 8th is on the cusp of the 10th, and the ruler of the ascendant is below the horizon, then there is reason to fear that the patient will not recover.

20. The recovery will happen much quicker if the Moon is swift in motion and increasing in light, and applying by sextile or trine to the ruler of the ascendant, even though it may be below the horizon. This happens even more easily if there is a reception. The recovery happens much sooner if the Moon is above the horizon applying to the ruler of the ascendant.

21. If the ruler of the ascendant is in the 6th, or the ruler of the 6th is in the 1st, then the illness is prolonged and the patient finds it a real burden. An opposition or square from the ruler of the 6th to the ruler of the 1st does much the same.

22. If the two Benefics Jupiter or Venus are very powerful in the chart, then the patient has good hopes of getting well. If the Malefics are strong, then the opposite will occur.

23. An applying conjunction from the ruler of the 4th to the ruler of the 8th prolongs the illness and may indicate death if the ruler of the 4th is a Malefic. If the ruler of the 4th is a Benefic, then expect the opposite.

24. If a retrograde planet is the significator of a disease, then it shows the continuation of the illness, and indicates relapses and recurrent crises.

25. A stationary significator shows a tendency to vomit, and a great deal of change and variation in the course of the illness. The reason for this is that a stationary planet has lots of time to cause mischief since it does not move. If the significator is combust the Sun the patient often dies. This is so because the stationary planet has more time to receive damage since it does not move.

26. A significator in its fall or detriment is a poor prognosis and indicates great danger, as well as showing much distrust and fear on the part of the patient.

27. If the ascendant and the Moon are afflicted, and the ruler of the ascendant and the dispositor of the Moon are not, then the disease is in the body and not in the spirit.

28. If the ascendant and Moon are free from misfortune, but their rulers are unfortunate, then the grief lies in the spirit and not in the body. But if both are afflicted, then both the body and mind are tormented. If a Malefic aspects the ascendant and not the Moon, then the disease is in the physical body and not the spirit.

29. If the ruler of the 6th is in the 1st, 9th, 10th or 11th houses, then the disease is manifest and easily detected. In the 7th or 4th, it lies hidden and unknown, and so in the 8th and 12th.

30. Cardinal signs can easily cause the illness to vary, while fixed signs make it long and permanent and difficult. Mutable signs show relapses, or extremely variable symptoms and indications, and the patient appears better at times only to get worse again.

31. At the beginning of the illness, you may have good reason to fear a poorly placed or afflicted Moon , add to that the good or poor placement of the ruler of the ascendant, and so determine the patient's prognosis.

32. If it is possible to obtain the patient's natal chart, see if the Moon in the Illness Chart is conjunct a Malefic in the natal chart, or is making a hard aspect to it. In that case the cure will be long and difficult, and the illness a challenge to overcome.

33. If at the beginning of the illness the Moon is in the 4th, 6th 7th 8th or 12th house of the natal chart, and there is a Malefic in that house natally, then it generally manifests as death, unless a Benefic aspects either the Moon or the natal planet.

34. When the ascendant of the illness chart is opposite to that of the natal chart, or if it falls into the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, then recovery is unlikely.

35. When the ruler of the 2nd is in hard aspect to the ruler of the ascendant then the patient will only be cured at great expense and if he dies, then the money will have been spent to no purpose.

36. The Sun in the 1st usually brings health immediately, but if the Sun is in the 6th, then the illness eventually changes. If the ruler of the 8th is combust, then the patient will recover and not die at this time.

37. The Sun is the light of heaven, and clarifies and beautifies those signs that it is in, destroying nature’s enemies. However, if the ruler of the 1st or 6th is combust the Sun or afflicted by a combust planet, then this can be an indication of a lifelong illness.

38. Fear not for the life of the patient when Jupiter is in good aspect to the Sun, even though the ruler of the ascendant makes an applying hard aspect to the ruler of the 8th

39. If at the time that the illness is first noticed the Moon is separating from combustion, then the illness will continue until the Moon opposes the Sun.

40. If the ruler of the ascendant is unfortunate in the 8th, the patient's illness will get worse and delay the cure by bad treatment and carelessness.

41. If the significator of the patient is occidental, then it indicates chronic illness, and if it is oriental, then it is a new illness. Consider the dynamic aspects of the Moon, because the disease will get better or worse with the succession of its applying and separating aspects.

42. If Saturn rules the illness, then it is the result of a chill, and if Mars or the Sun rules the illness, then it results from too much heat or bacterial infection, and will result in a fever.

43. The Moon is more afflicted by Mars when it is increasing in light, and more repressed by Saturn when waning. Beware if the Moon is placed in such an unfortunate position at the beginning of the illness. Understand that Mars does more mischief when it is in masculine signs, oriental and above the earth. The opposite is true if the illness involves Saturn.

WILL THE DISEASE BE LONG OR SHORT?
When looking at an illness chart you need to keep in mind the time of year. In Winter, illnesses are usually longer and continue for an extended period of time. In Summer, they tend to be very brief, in Spring health returns very soon, and in Fall deadly and very destructive diseases occur. Colds and dry diseases result from a Saturn influence, and they tend to be permanent or at least very long and are regulated by the Sun. Hot and dry diseases which are generated by the influence of Mars or the Sun are usually very short, and the outcome is determined by the motion of the Moon, Saturn produces chronic and very serious diseases, Jupiter and the Sun very brief ones, with Venus producing illnesses of average length. Mercury produces diverse and changeable illnesses. The Sun produces illnesses that soon return to normal, such as fainting, light-headedness and and Saturn causes gout.

Signs of Long or Short Illness

If the sign on the 6th is Fixed, then expect a long illness, with a Cardinal Sign it will of short duration, and in a Mutable Sign somewhere in between. Mutable signs indicate that the illness is very variable and will appear to come and go several times. If the last six degrees of any sign are on the 6th house cusp, then the disease is almost at an end, or about to make a big change for better or for worse. Fixed Signs indicate that the illness will not be cured without a great deal of time and difficulty. When the ruler of the 6th is of a Malefic nature and is in the 6th, then it is a bad sign indicating a serious illness of long duration. If one of the Benefics is there then the illness will soon be cured nor is it fatal. If the ruler of the 6th is stronger than the ruler of the 1st, then the disease is likely to get worse, so advise the patient to take appropriate remedies because his constitution is weaker than the disease. But if the ruler of the 6th is weaker than the ruler of the 1st, than the patient's natural resistance will overcome his illness without much assistance from a physician. If Saturn is ruler of the 6th and in a Fixed Sign, then the illness will be extremely prolonged. If Saturn is retrograde or slow in motion, the effect will be the same. But if Saturn is in a Cardinal Sign in any of its own terms and swift in motion, then it is not as unfortunate, nor will it greatly prolong the disease.
If there is a Cardinal Sign on the 6th and likewise the Moon in the 6th, and no other impediment, then the disease only continues for a short time. A Mutable Sign on the 6th indicates a longer infirmity, except for Pisces, which acts a lot like a Cardinal Sign. If the Moon applies by a bad aspect to the ruler of the ascendant, then the disease will get worse. If the Moon is in the 6th in bad aspect to Venus, then the patient can blame himself for the disease, because he is a disorderly fellow with a poor diet. And if Venus is in Scorpio, then he has been infected with a venereal disease that was transmitted to him by a prostitute. If a woman is the patient, then she has too great a discharge of blood during her period, or the illness is brought on by her own promiscuity.
If the ruler of the 6th applies to the ruler of the ascendant with a square or opposition, then the disease is getting worse, and has not yet reached its peak or worst potential. The same is true if the ruler of the 6th is in the 8th or 12th, which is a strong indication that the sick person will get much worse before his disease is finally cured. If a Malefic is in the 6th, and moving from one sign to another, then the disease will soon change. If the question is asked ”When and how long before it does so?” then see how many degrees the Malefic planet needs to travel before it leaves the sign it is in. Use this number along with the quality of the sign and house to give you a figure in days, weeks or months.
If the ruler of the 6th is retrograde or combust in the 8th or 12th and in hard aspect with Mars, Saturn or the ruler of the 4th or 8th of the chart, then this indicates great infirmity and a very long illness and sudden change from better to worse if not death itself. If the ruler of the 6th is in the 8th and the ruler of the 8th is in the 6th, with a trine or sextile between them, then you have no reason to doubt that the patient will cheat death, for the heavens declare that the sick person's vitality is not yet overcome or so weak that the illness will overcome him. If there is a trine, sextile or conjunction between the ruler of the 6th and Jupiter in the 9th, and the Moon separates from the ruler of the 6th and applies to Jupiter then the medicines that the physician prescribed and the patient has already taken made him initially very sick. Even though the medicines initially brought unpleasant side effects to other parts of the body, afterwards the sick person felt great comfort and improvement in that part of the body affected by the illness.  If either Mars or Saturn or any malefic planet is in the 6th, then this threatens great danger from the illness, yet if they are well aspected or strong in their essential dignities, then they cause little harm. You may be sure that the illness appeared rather suddenly and unexpectedly, rather than being caused by some action on the part of the patient. This should bring a measure of comfort to the patient. If you find a Benefic well placed in the 6th, then you can be sure that the disease is not now nor will ever be permanent or cause death.
When you find the ruler of the 6th in the 1st, and the ruler of the 1st in the 6th, then you may be certain that the disease is of long duration, and will continue until one of the significators moves out of the sign it is in. If it happens that after the planet moves into the new sign it makes a square or opposition to the ruler of the 4th or 8th, or a hard aspect to Mars or Saturn, and if they are slow in motion and in signs making a hard aspects to each other, then this is a strong indication that the sick person will depart this life and die. When you find that the ruler of the 6th is afflicted by the square or opposition to the ruler of the ascendant, then this is a sign to the physician that the disease is incurable and the sick person will suffer chronic pain. When the ruler of the 6th is in the 1st then the disease will continue but the pain does slacken and seems quite gone at times, or the patient is no longer conscious of it. But if the ruler of the 1st is in a Cadent House, then the disease is not serious nor will it continue for a long time. Good planets in the 6th promise that the disease will soon end, while Malefic planets bring the opposite. Usually a Malefic planet in the 6th indicates that the disease is unpredictable and changeable, and if the ruler of the 6th is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, then this indicates that the disease is not easily curable. If the ruler of the ascendant and the Moon are free from hard aspect to Mars or Saturn, or any other Malefic planet, and are direct and free from combustion, fast in motion, not peregrine, or in fall or detriment, nor in the 6th or 8th house, or in any aspect with the ruler of the 12th, then this is a good indication of health and recovery.
When the ruler of the ascendant is in the 4th or 8th and not afflicted, then this indicates recovery not death. If the ruler of the ascendant is unfortunately placed by sign or house in the 4th, then it indicates great difficulty before the person is cured. The ruler of the ascendant itself may be unfortunate, either by its house or retrograde, peregrine or combustion, or in its fall or detriment. In this case it may be possible that the patient may be cured, but he will have a relapse soon after, or collapse due to some serious infirmity or die. When the ruler of the ascendant is afflicted by the ruler of the 6th or 12th, and in bad aspect to the Moon, then there is great danger due to the disease. Above all, be vigilant if Saturn is ruler of the ascendant and is out of its dignities, slow, waning in light or retrograde, because the patient will be sick for a long time. The opposite is true if Saturn is otherwise qualified.
If the ruler of the ascendant is angular and has no aspect to any Malefic, but is in a benefic house and under the sunbeams or retrograde, then this indicates that the patient is in no danger at this time. When the ruler of the ascendant is fast in motion and entering into a new sign, or moving from one house to another, as long as it is not moving into the 6th or 12th, then the disease will quickly be controlled. If the ruler of the ascendant is not afflicted in itself, or by the bad aspect to a Malefic or to a planet of an opposite nature to itself, then the patient will recover. If the ruler of the 1st is fast in motion, and in some good aspect to a Benefic, then this is a strong indication that natural vitality of the patient is undiminished, and he is able to overcome the virulence of the disease, and that very quickly. But if the significator of the patient is strongly afflicted, then this is a sign of the strength of the illness. The illness is greater when the significator of life is weaker than the planet afflicting it. If all the significators of the disease are in Fixed Signs, then this indicates a great deal of time until the patient is cured, nor will an effective treatment be easily found. When the ruler of the ascendant receives an applying aspect from a malefic planet, then this slows down the cure and prolongs the illness, even though there are great hopes for improvement. When the Moon is slow in motion and is in any aspect with the ruler of the ascendant, then the same thing applies. If the Moon is fast in motion then the cure is performed very quickly, or at least in a short time. Usually when the Moon decreases in light and motion, and in hard aspect to Saturn, then this is a very dangerous time unless the disease is already waning. When the Moon is in conjunction with a planet that is oriental, direct and fast, then the illness will be short. If the Moon conjuncts a retrograde or occidental planet, then look for the opposite outcome, and the illness will be long.
When you find Scorpio ascending, then you may take this as an indication that the patient was the cause of his own illness. He has been emotionally excessive, and he has been angry, promiscuous, or quick tempered, and your analysis will be more certain if Mars is also in Scorpio. If both luminaries are in Cadent houses, and the planets that are their dispositors are unfortunate, then the patient may expect a terrible illness. If the Benefics give some help in the matter, then the illness may be of long duration, and of a painful condition or maybe chronic, yet the patient will recover beyond all expectations. You can be more confident of this prediction if the Benefics have more essential dignity than the Malefics. If you find that Mars is the ruler of the ascendant and placed in the unfortunate 6th house in trine or sextile with Venus, then this is not true, and little benefit derives from this aspect. But if Mars squares or opposes Venus, then there is not much danger to the patient.
If the ruler of the 6th is combust or retrograde, in its fall or detriment, and in the 8th, or in conjunction, square or opposition with Mars or Saturn, then there is some doubt that the disease will ever leave the patient until he dies. If the Moon is also making hard aspects to the ruler of the 8th then you can be certain that this prediction will come true.  If either the Moon or the ruler of the ascendant is in hard aspect to a retrograde Benefic, then the patient will recover but not very quickly, because this is an indication that the illness will be prolonged, and he may relapse into other illnesses. When you find Moon separating from an opposition to the Sun, fast in motion and applying to a square or opposition to Mars, then the illness will be severe if not fatal. But if at the same time the Moon applies to a sextile or trine to Venus or Jupiter, then the patient will recover. There is usually no danger if the Moon at the time of the question is strong and the ruler of the ascendant is free from misfortune. It also helps if the ruler of the 1st is in no aspect to the ruler of the 6th, yet when the Moon applies to Saturn, or is impeded then this is a bad sign that there is an illness about to begin. The patient mistrusts his own judgment while he is sick, but he does not know to whom to go for help, or what part of his body is diseased.
If in the Illness Chart the Moon is in the 1st house, in hard aspect to Mars or Saturn, or any other unfortunate planet, then this is a bad sign, unless the Moon is in reception with the planet or planets so afflicting it. It is very important to observe what sign the Moon is in. In a Fixed sign, expect a long bout of illness, in a Cardinal sign the illness is over quickly, and in a Mutable sign the disease will be easy enough to cure, but it will take some time. If there is a translation of light from the unfortunately placed dispositor of the Moon to the ruler of the ascendant, or to the cusp of the 1st, then there is strong suspicion that the patient will have a serious illness, according to the nature of the signs and planets indicating the illness.

Indicators That the Patient Will Not Die of his Current Illness
If the patient is serious about wanting to know whether or not he will be cured of the illness from which he currently suffers and continue to live, then you need to carefully examine the chart and observe the following rules. If the Moon has separated from a Malefic or a weak planet that is applying to a Benefic that is powerful in its dignities, then the sick person will be restored to his former health. If Saturn is oriental of the Sun and is the significator of the disease, then the illness is the result of exposure to cold, which is the true nature of Saturn without any aspects, and the patient will recover. Similarly, if you find that Saturn is occidental and the general indicators are that the illness is the result of heat rather than cold, than the patient will soon recover. You need to keep in mind that Saturn is unlucky when occidental. As for the effects of Mars, you will find that after its opposition to the Sun or when it is occidental, then there is not as much need to fear it as when it is oriental. The conjunction of the Moon with Mars is dangerous, and it can be an indication of a serious illness at hand, while the square or opposition are not as serious. The Moon causes more damage when increasing in light than when it is decreasing in light, and the same applies to Mars when it is oriental or occidental.
When you find that there is a reception between the ruler of the ascendant and the ruler of the 8th, and neither of them afflicted by malefic planets, then there will be complete recovery after initial setbacks. This includes the ruler of the ascendant in reception with the ruler of the 8th by house or element, the Benefics aspecting either the ascendant degree or the 6th house cusp with a trine or sextile, or the Moon in reception with the ruler of the ascendant. In these cases, there is no danger of death and the sick person will recover. If the ruler of the ascendant is a Benefic, placed in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 10th or 11th and not afflicted by the square or opposition of a Malefic, then this indicates recovery. The same is true if the Benefics are in the 10th or 1st houses in the Illness Chart. Nothing is a clearer indication of good health or that the sick person will live than finding Sun, Venus, Jupiter or the Moon in the 1st house of the Illness Chart and not afflicted by the hard aspects to the ruler of the 6th or 8th. This prediction is more certain if the above significators are in Cancer, Leo, Taurus or Libra, signs ruled by Benefics such as Moon, Sun, or Venus. If the Moon is in its own sign or in the signs ruled by Venus, Jupiter, in any aspect to either of them, and free from hard aspects to Mars or Saturn, then this is a good indication of good health and life.
It is a good indication for recovery when you find the Moon in conjunction with Jupiter in any sign, but not as good in Capricorn as in any other sign. Neither the Moon nor Jupiter has any standing in Capricorn, since the Moon is in its detriment and Jupiter is in its fall. No planet delights to be in a sign where it is in its fall, nor is it able to express the scope of its influence. When the Moon applies to the ruler of ascendant by a sextile or trine and it is clear of any other affliction, and not impeded by the ruler of the 8th or 6th, then a return to good health is likely. Safety is also to be expected when the Moon is well aspected and positioned in a succeedent house. This holds true as long as it is increasing in light and motion, and not near the position of Mars or Saturn, or affected by their influence. If the Moon is either in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, in sextile or trine with the ruler of the ascendant, or with its antiscion, even though the ruler of the 1st may be a Malefic, yet it still promises life as long neither the ruler of the 1st or the Moon have any other impediment.
When the Moon in the Illness Chart is VOC, and at its next crisis has a sextile or trine to Venus or Jupiter at the very degree of the crisis, then the sick person will recover. However, he will have a lot of pain and grief at the time of the question or when the first sample was given. When at the very beginning or first approach of the disease the Moon, Sun or ruler of the ascendant are free from bad aspects of the Malefics or the ruler of the 8th, then there needs to be no fear or suspicion that the sick person may die. When the Benefics are stronger than the Malefics, then you may give assurances and hopes of life to the patient and he can be confident of recovery.

Indicators of Death
When the ascendant in the Illness Chart is in the 7th house of the natal chart, you may have good reason to fear death, unless the profection for that year is of the same sign. The signs that are adverse are the ones on the cusp of the natal 6th, 7th 8th and 12th houses. When the five significators in the natal chart and in the illness chart as well as the ruler of the ascendant are afflicted, then you have good reason to think that death will follow immediately. This is usually true unless there is a reception between the Malefics and the Benefics that intervene with their easy aspects. In that case, as if by a divine miracle the sick person will escape death. The person who first gets sick in the hour of Mars will get a hot disease or fever, and if he falls sick in the hour of Saturn then he will have a cold disease, and suffer from chills. If the ruler of the ascendant and the Moon are conjunction the ruler of the 8th, without the intervening aspects of the Benefics, then there is the threat of death.
If the ruler of the 8th is angular, and the ruler of the ascendant is cadent, then this usually indicates death. This is even more certain if the ruler of the 8th is a Malefic. The application of the Moon to a planet in the 8th is always dangerous. The application of the ruler of the ascendant to the ruler of the 8th or to a malefic planet in the 8th by hard aspect indicates death, since the Moon in any way afflicted indicates death. If the Moon translates or transfers the light and influence of the ruler of the ascendant to the ruler of the 8th then this usually indicates death. This is also true if the ruler of the 8th is in the 1st and the ruler of the 1st and the Moon are both afflicted. The illness also proves fatal when the ruler of the 1st is unfortunate in the 8th, and the Moon weak or having no essential dignity and afflicted. If the ruler of the ascendant is below the horizon and in any aspect to the ruler of the 8th in the 8th, or the ruler of the 1st in the 4th conjunction the ruler of the 8th, then this indicates death. It is a very bad indication for survival if the ruler of the ascendant is  conjunct the ruler of the 4th, 6th, 7th, or 12th, since this means that the patient has no chance of recovery.
Pay special attention to the luminaries in the chart, since their bad or good aspects affect the accuracy of your judgment. If the ruler of the ascendant is afflicted by a Malefic in the 8th, without the intervention of the easy aspects of the Benefics, and the Moon also poorly placed and powerless, then this is a strong indication of death. This is usually true because the patient is guilty of mismanaging his life, or there is an error in the diagnosis and treatments by the physician. It is a strong indication that the patient will die when at the time of the first question to the physician you find the ruler of the ascendant combust in the 1st.  If the ruler of the ascendant is in the 8th and unfortunate by sign and aspect, then this indicates death. If the ruler of the 8th is in the 10th, and the ruler of the ascendant is in the 4th, 6th or 7th, afflicted by Malefics, then this indicates death.
If a planet in the 1st is strong by sign and if it is both the ruler of the hour and of the 8th, then this indicates death. If the ruler of the 8th is retrograde and in hard aspect with the Moon, then this indicates death. If the ruler of the 8th is in the 7th and the Moon and the ruler of the ascendant are in cadent houses, afflicted by bad aspects to the Malefics, then this indicates death. This is more certain if one of the Malefics is the ruler of the 8th, or placed in the 8th. If the Moon is in conjunction with Jupiter or Saturn, then the illness will get worse and the patient will not escape death unless Saturn is retrograde and Jupiter direct. When the ruler of the ascendant is in conjunction with the ruler of the 8th, or in hard aspect with a planet in that house, or conjunct the antiscion of the ruler of the 8th, then this indicates the patient will die. This is usually so unless there is a sextile or trine from Jupiter, but if the Moon is in any way afflicted, then the patient will still die. If the ruler of the ascendant is in reception with a planet in the 8th then it is possible the patient will avoid death. Even with the reception the patient cannot avoid a very long and serious illness.  If the Moon aspects Mars or Saturn, without the assistance of a good aspect from Venus or Jupiter, and Saturn is at the same time moving slow or retrograde, then the illness will get much worse and this is an indication that the patient may die. If the other indicators also concur, then this is much more certain. If the ruler of the ascendant is in the 7th, then in its fall, or below the horizon in the 6th or in another cadent house, afflicted by the Malefics, and the ruler of the 8th is in the 7th, then these are indications of death. If a Malefic planet is near the ascending degree, or a malefic fixed star such as Antares or Aldebaran, the North and South Scales, or Alcyone and Algol, then the patient will die.
If the ruler of the ascendant is in Leo or Aquarius, or in any bad configuration with the ruler of the 6th or 12th, then there is little hope of recovery. If both lights are afflicted by an angular Saturn then this is an indication of a very long and tedious illness. The same is true if both lights are poorly dignified and below the horizon. If the Sun  is afflicted by a hard aspect to Saturn or Mars, or is exactly at the antiscion of a Malefic planet, or applying and not separating to malefic aspects, then either death or an extraordinarily long illness will result.  If the Moon at the onset of the illness comes to an opposition to the ruler of the ascendant, which is retrograde or combust, then this indicates death, or a serious illness that is not easily curable.
If Saturn is in opposition with the ruler of the 8th, and the Moon in the 4th with Mars, or the Moon in the 1st and near the ascendant, then this is an indication of death.  If the Moon is besieged by Malefics, or between the Sun and t, or between the Sun and Saturn, then these are bad signs regarding health. If the ruler of the ascendant is combust the Sun, then undoubtedly there will be death, unless there is some reception between the Sun the other significators. If such a reception exists, and the Moon proves fortunately placed, then after initial fears of danger, a little hope still remains. A person who falls sick while the Moon is under the sunbeams, that is separating from combustion, will have his illness get worse until the Moon has passed the opposition to the Sun. But if the Moon is badly placed, and comes to a bad aspect of the ruler of the 8th, then while it may threaten death, the patient may still survive. If the Moon is combust in the 8th house and in the signs of Leo or Libra in square or opposition to Saturn or Mercury, or in conjunction with the Pleiades at 0 degrees Gemini, or conjunction other malefic fixed stars, then this is an indication of death. If the Moon is ruler of the 6th or of the ascendant and is in combustion with the Sun and the ruler of the 8th is at the same time afflicted by the hard aspects of Saturn or Mars, then this indicates death. Any Malefic in the 6th, or any planet peregrine and afflicted in that house, indicate great danger in the illness.
The patient will NOT recover if a number of the following afflictions are present. If his ruler combusts the Sun in the 1st or the ruler of his 8th is in his 10th, then he will not recover. If the ruler of the 1st is in his 4th, 6th, 8th or 12th, in hard aspect to a Malefic, then he will not recover. He is doubly unfortunate by having a Malefic in the 1st while his ruler conjuncts another. When his ruler is below the horizon in hard aspect to the ruler of his 8th, especially if they are conjunct each other or his 4th house cusp, then he will not recover. When the same planet rules both his 1st and 8th houses and is cadent and in hard aspect to the Sun, Saturn, Mars or Uranus, then he will not recover. If there is a Malefic in his 6th house while the ruler of his 6th is in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses, then there is little hope of recovery. If the ruler of his 1st is in his 4th and in hard aspect to the ruler of his 6th or 8th, or conjunct Saturn, then there is no hope of recovery. If the ruler of the 1st and the Moon are in his 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th and conjunct the ruler of his 8th, especially if that ruler is Malefic, then there is no recovery. Even Jupiter and the Sun cannot save the patient if they rule his 1st and are in his 8th or 4th afflicting Saturn or in a critical degree, or conjunct a malefic fixed star. The Moon indicates death if it is in the 4th and Mars or the Sun is there conjunct Uranus or Saturn. When the Moon is conjunct the ascendant and squares Mars in the 4th or if it is in the 8th conjunct the Sun or in hard aspect to the ruler of the 8th retrograde, then the patient will not recover. When the Moon rules the 6th and is combust the Sun in any angular house, then the patient will not recover.
Will the patient die soon? A Malefic in the 8th signifies death, and if the ruler of the 3rd, 4th, 8th, or 10th is afflicted, it signifies that death is now approaching. Any Malefic ruling the 9th and coming to the 8th cusp indicates death is on the way. Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Mercury indicate death from natural causes and generally painless unless with Mars or Saturn. The Sun indicates death from constitutional weakness, usually beginning or ending with the heart. If the Moon or a Malefic in the natal 4th afflicts the Sun then the problem is usually congenital, existing since birth.
Uranus in or conjunct the 8th shows sudden and unexpected death, a violent death that is over very quickly and probably by accident if it is conjunct Mars. It occurs as the result of an acute attack, or perhaps by murder or suicide if Uranus aspects Neptune. Neptune in or conjunct the 8th house cusp indicates death in a coma, with the possibility of a mistaken diagnosis of death and a possible premature burial. Death comes slowly if Saturn is in or conjunct the 8th. Death will result from chronic disability, or from an asthmatic attack if Saturn aspects Mercury. If Neptune is also involved, there may be the possibility of drowning. The Moon afflicting any Malefic in the 1st is a danger signal.

Claude Dariot Abridged

IS THE PATIENT ILL OR NOT?
If the significator of the patient is in a sign contrary to its own nature, such as hot and dry Mars being ruler of the ascendant and placed in Cancer, which is cold and wet, then the patient is ill. Or if the ruler of the ascendant is in a Cadent House, especially in the 6th, then the patient is sick. If the significator of the ascendant is a masculine planet, below the horizon, badly aspected, combust, retrograde, in its fall or detriment or weak, then the patient is ill. This is also true if the significator is besieged between two Malefics, or in the terms of a Malefic, or conjunct malefic fixed stars, then the patient is sick. When the question is asked at the time that a urine sample is taken or even without it, erect a chart and observe this method to find out whether the patient is really ill or not. If the ascendant is not afflicted, or its ruler not out of its essential dignities, or not in any bad aspect to Saturn or Mars, or to the ruler of the 6th then the patient is not sick. If no Malefics afflict the 6th house by their presence, or if the Moon is not afflicted in the 8th or 12th, or if Jupiter or Venus or North Node make a sextile or trine to the cusp of the ascendant or the 6th, then the patient is not sick. Or even if he is ill, the illness will not be serious, or it is based on some fleeting influence and he will soon get better.

On Which Side of the Body is the Illness?
When you find the ruler of the 6th unfortunate or afflicted and above the horizon, then the disease is in the right side of the body and in its upper part. If the ruler of the 6th is below the horizon, or powerless and in a masculine sign, then the disease is in the front of the body such as the forehead or stomach. If the ruler of the 6th is in a feminine sign, then the illness is in the back of the body. If the significator of the illness is in a feminine sign, and in aspect to feminine planets in a feminine sign or house, then the disease is on the left side of the body. If the ruler of the 6th is a masculine planet and it is above the horizon, then the pain is on the right side of the body. If the significator is in the first few degrees of a sign, then the upper part of that organ or body part is pained or infected. If the significator is in the middle degrees of a sign, then the middle part of that organ is distressed, and in the later degrees of the sign the lower part of the organ or body part is distressed.

IS THE CAUSE OF THE DISEASE EMOTIONAL OR PHYSICAL?
We determine the inward or physical cause and condition of the disease from the bad disposition of the significator of the patient by sign, house or aspect to malefic planets. Remember that any planet may in this case be a Malefic if it is the ruler of the 8th, 12th or 6th houses. The outward or emotional cause is determined from the Malefics that afflict the ruler of the ascendant, or from the principal significators in the chart, or the Moon. If you find the ruler of the ascendant sufficiently strong in its essential dignities, fast in motion and in a good house in the chart, then you may decide that the patient is not seriously ill but only accidentally afflicted by outward causes. If you find that despite the strength of the ruler of the ascendant it is being afflicted by hard aspects to Mars or Saturn, and neither of them are the ruler of the 6th or the dispositor of the Moon, then you may decide that some outward event has happened to the person so that he is not well yet not seriously ill either. Observe in what house the afflicting planet is, and what house it rules, and from the analysis of that house come to a conclusion based on astrological factors.
For example, if you find that the ruler of the ascendant is afflicted by Mars or Saturn, and one of them is the ruler of the 2nd house, and there appears to be no inward or physical cause of a disease, then you may conclude that the patient is in need of money, or has recently suffered financial losses if the significators are separating. The size of the loss you may judge according to the strength of the afflicting planet and the type of aspect. Oppositions are worse than squares or conjunctions in this regard. If the afflicting planet is the ruler of the 5th, be it a Malefic or Benefic, then the illness is caused by a bad diet, excess consumption of food, alcohol or sex, or gambling or playing too many sports if the patient is capable. Or the father may be stingy with his financial support or allowance if the patient is a young person. If the ruler of the 7th afflicts the ruler of the ascendant, then the person has lately had some difference of opinion with his spouse, or is involved in some lawsuit with a willful neighbour or business partner.  If the patient is young, and the ruler of the 5th or 7th afflicts the ruler of the 1st, then he is depressed because of an unhappy love affair. The person that the patient loves is unkind and treats him badly, so the current upset is merely due to emotional stress for romantic reasons and no serious illness will follow.

The Quality and Nature of the Disease
Once you have erected a chart, consider what planet is significator of the disease, and if you find that it is Saturn then you can be sure that it produces long lasting and chronic illnesses, recurring aches, coughs, tuberculosis and other illnesses.  If Saturn is in Leo or Scorpio with either of the Nodes, or combust, or if Saturn is conjunct malefic fixed stars, then the sick person is afflicted with persistent and dangerous fevers. There may be just suspicion that the sick person has been poisoned or has consumed some drink or food which has the same effect as a poison.
When Saturn is in a Fire Sign then it usually indicates consuming or wasting fevers, and in Water Signs the illness is caused by exposure to cold and wet conditions. The latter is more certain if Venus or Moon, which are moist and cold, have some signification in the disease along with Saturn.  The course of the illness is long and vicious with sudden attacks and convulsions due to high fever, and the illness seems to rise and ebb like the tide. The sick person is overwhelmed by fever driven hallucinations, fears and nightmares, alternating with chills and shivering coldness.
With Saturn in Fixed Signs then there are persistent aches and fevers, chest infections, or dry coughs, gout, leprosy or scabs all over the body afflict the patient. In Cardinal Signs Saturn  indicates a general change in health causing skin eruptions, accumulation of fluids, and inner ear infections. In Mutable Signs Saturn indicates an upset in several body systems with many changes and recurring illnesses that last a long time. If Saturn has any signification and is in aspect with good planets, then the disease will completely go away and be cured, but if Saturn is conjunct the ruler of the 8th or 6th, then the sick person may expect to die.
If Jupiter is significator of the illness, then this indicates a problem with the liver, or an infection of the blood, or some other cause connected to the nature of the sign that it is in. In Cancer, which is a Water Sign, the illness produces watery discharges such as runny noses and eyes, phlegm, and the patient feels cold. In Fire Signs the patient is overheated or feverish because of some infection, and Jupiter in a Fire Sign indicates fevers resulting from infections of the blood, yet without the poisons caused by other infected organs. In Air Signs there are problems with breathing, because of infected airways and lungs. The obstructions can be reduced through application of hot compresses and sweating In Earth Signs the blood is poisoned by metabolic by-products, clots too easily and is too thick and flows too sluggishly.
If Mars is combust the Sun then this indicates a very high and sudden fever caused by an infection or poisoning of the blood. If Mars is a significator of the disease and in a sign afflicting the luminaries or the ruler of the ascendant, then it generates hot burning fevers, or some kind of obstruction if Saturn is involved, or if Mars is in any of its essential dignities. If Mars is in Mutable Signs, then the disease will not be easily discovered, it will come and go and there is no certainty when the illness is over. Usually with Mars in Mutable Signs the patient is bothered with several infirmities that are acute, often recurring just when there are expectations of recovery. The symptoms here occur suddenly, and critical days come faster and are over sooner to the good or ill of the patient according to the significator. If Mars is under the Sunbeams in the 6th or 12th and in Fire Signs, then it brings scorching fevers that are excessively hot as if the blood were boiling. Mars being the cause of a fever and in g indicates boils and burning fevers, and may damage the large veins near the heart.
When the Sun is in hard aspect to Saturn, or conjunct the antiscion of Saturn , then the disease is merely melancholy and depression of the spirits. If the Sun is afflicted by Mars by hard aspects, then the disease is due to liver disease. If Venus is a significator of the illness, then it indicates excess in eating and stomach upsets, or infections of the genitals or some romantic upset. If Venus is in Fire Signs it indicates a fever that lasts only one day, but if Mars joins as a significator, then it indicates a high fever arising from infection of the mucous membranes. When Mercury is unfortunate and is the significator of the illness, then the sick person has an illness in the head and is disturbed by hallucinations and nightmares, delirium, fainting, colds and whooping cough. When the ruler of the 9th is in the 6th, then the disease stems from some poison, fascination, charm or mental obsession with the occult.

Is the Illness Mental or Physical?
You need to understand that the ascendant, the Moon and the ruler of the house where the Sun is indicate the human spirit. The ruler of the ascendant and the planet that is the dispositor of the Moon indicate both external and internal causes. If you notice that the ascendant, Sun, and the Moon are all powerless or afflicted, then the disease has spread through the whole body and no organ or system is free of it. If the dispositors of the Sun and Moon, and the ruler of the ascendant or at least two of them are afflicted, then the illness is emotional and in the spirit or due to some mental or emotional stress.  The ruler of the ascendant and the dispositor of the Moon are the significators of the physical faculties and illnesses in people, and anything that may happen to them. This includes deprivation of the senses, insanity, hysteria, and depression. If the ruler of the ascendant, the Moon and the ruler of the house of the Sun are all three or any two of them impeded, then the illness is in the mind and not in the body.
If the ascendant and the Moon are both unfortunate, and the ruler of the ascendant and the dispositor of the Moon are free from affliction, then the illness is in the mind and not in the body.  Saturn naturally causes melancholy and all sorts of problems resulting from depression and emotional stress. Whenever you find that Saturn is ruler of the hour, or the 12th or 6th house, or if the Moon is separating from it, then the illness is an affliction of the mind. If Saturn is in the 6th house or in the 1st, or in hard aspect to the ruler of the ascendant, then the illness is emotional and not physical, and the patient has some problems on his mind.
The opposite is true of the effects of Jupiter, which never depresses the mind but only affects the body. If the ruler of the house of the Moon and of the ascendant is afflicted by the Sun, combust, or under the Sunbeams, then the illness is in the body. If the dispositor of the ruler of the ascendant, and the dispositor of the Moon are in their fall, detriment or otherwise afflicted and unfortunate, then the disease is more in the mind than it is in the body.
If a planet in the 1st, or the ascendant, or the ruler of the house of the Moon is afflicted in the 12th, or aspected by a hard aspect to Mars, then the illness is both in the mind and the body. If a malefic planet aspects the ascendant and not the Moon, and the dispositor of the Sun is afflicted, then the person is emotionally ill and not physically ill. If the ascendant degree and the degree of the Moon are more afflicted than the rulers of those signs, then the disease is more in the mind than in the body. The opposite is true if the rulers of these signs are more afflicted than the degree of the ascendant and the Moon. If the ruler of the ascendant and the Sun are in their exaltation, and the dispositor of the Moon is in its detriment or fall, then the disease is in the physical body and not the mind. If the rulers of the houses of the Moon and the Sun are in their detriment or fall, peregrine or retrograde, then the patient is suffering from a tormented soul. If the ascending degree squares the Moon and is free from hard aspects to Mars or Saturn, or combust the Sun, then the patient has a very troubled mind. Usually when the ruler of the ascendant or the ruler of the hour or the ruler of the 12th are significators of the patient, then this indicates a mind troubled with arrogance, pride, conceit and self-importance.
Venus indicates that luxury and a preoccupation with sexual affairs disturb both the mind and the body. Mercury indicates senile fantasies and a fearful imagination whenever you find it afflicted. Mercury is easily moved to distrust and paranoia, is subject to its own jealous fantasies, and listens to every bit of rumour and gossip. Above all you need to look at ruler of the ascendant, the Sun and in the natal chart to see if they are in a sign where a current eclipse has occurred at the time of the illness or close to it, or a great conjunction, because these are unfortunate.
If the sign of the eclipse or of a great conjunction threatens misfortune, or the sign on the 8th house of the Solar Return falls in the angles of the natal chart, especially the 1st house, then this indicates great danger. When the sign that is on the ascendant of the illness chart contains a Malefic in the natal chart, then this indicates great problems for the patient, and he will be seriously ill. The applying combustion or conjunction of the Moon with the Sun is a very bad sign, especially when they are less than six degrees apart. However, if the conjunction occurs in Aries or Leo, the signs where the Sun is exalted or dignified, then the misfortune is lessened. If the Moon is more than 12 degrees from the Sun, then there is little danger.

CRISIS DAYS
To find the true crisis in the illness you must have an accurate time when the patient first took to his bed to lie down. If this time can’t be had then use the time the patient first consulted his physician. If the disease is not chronic but acute, then you will find great changes in the illness and in the patient. These times of crisis will occur when the Moon makes hard aspects to its position in the Illness Chart. These include the semi-square and sesquisquare, plus the squares and oppositions. You need to look at the aspects to other planets that the Moon makes when it is exactly making these hard aspects, whether the aspect is to a Malefic or Benefic. If the Moon makes a good aspect to a Benefic, then it indicates ease and improvement in the patient's condition. But if the Moon makes a hard aspect to the ruler of the 8th or 6th, then the patient will be worse, his pain will increase, and the medicine will do little good. This rule never fails whenever the Moon comes to a hard aspect of a planet that afflicts the ascendant.
Whenever the ruler of the ascendant or the Moon come to a hard aspect of the ruler of the 6th or a planet in the 6th then the patient will be greatly distressed. The disease will be strong and the medicine given at those times will have little or no effect. When the Moon comes to a trine or sextile of the ruler of the ascendant or the ruler of the 9th, 10th or 11th, then promise the patient some comfort and respite and a period of ease. This is also true if the ruler of the ascendant comes to a good aspect to the Sun, because then the patient's mind is greatly eased, as long as the Sun is not a significator of the illness. If it seems that the patient will most likely recover, and if the patient asks “When or what time that will be?” then look at the ruler of the ascendant, which Benefic planets it aspects, and how many degrees they are apart. Look at what mode of house both planets are in, whether they are angular, succeedent or cadent houses. Then look at what mode of sign they are in, whether Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable, and using discretion and looking at the nature of the disease, estimate a time. Usually if the aspect is in Cardinal signs then the patient will recover in days. This is more certain if the significators are fast in motion and angular. If the applying aspect occurs in Mutable signs then try not to estimate the time in days, weeks or months, but according your knowledge of the natural course of the disease. According to the Ancient Astrologers:

Cardinal Signs indicate Days   Angular Houses are equivalent to Cardinal Signs
Mutable Signs Weeks or Months  Succeedent Houses to Mutable Signs
Fixed Signs Months or Years   Cadent Houses equal Fixed Signs

Together with the principal significators, consider the fast or slow motion of the Moon, the sign it is in, and its quality, and mix them all together. That is the most rational way of judging time. When the ruler of the ascendant moves out of the sign it is in at the time of the question or the Illness Chart, and has essential dignities in the sign it is moving into, then the patient recovers immediately, or at least feels a noticeable improvement in his condition. If the cusp of the 6th house is in the later degrees of a sign, such as 28 degrees, then the illness will change in less than 2 weeks. Crisis is nothing more than a duel or contest between the disease and the natural resistance of the patient. If the patient overcomes the disease and recovers then it is a good crisis, and if the disease wins then it is a bad crisis. Crisis in this sense is nothing more than a sudden change or alteration in the condition of the patient. He will either improve and get better or have to face continuing illness. The crisis is the pitched battle between the illness and the patient to see which one will win. Critical days give you a more assured method of finding the days when the disease gets either worse or better. It is generally accepted amongst astrologers that the Moon has great influence and power over lesser planets, exciting and stirring up the illness, so that its motion will indicate the true crisis days of the illness. The crisis days are based on the Moon's position in the Illness Chart and the Moon’s waxing and waning phases relative to that degree of the zodiac. Find the times when the Moon makes hard aspects to its position in the Illness Chart, including the semi-square (45 degrees), square (90 degrees) sesquisquare (135 degrees) and opposition (180 degrees).

EXAMPLE 1:

A sick Doctor Asks: What is my disease, and is it curable?

The ascendant in this question is Scorpio, with the malefic fixed stars of the North and South Scales of the constellation Libra near the ascendant. *Editor’s Note* The ascendant is afflicted by the presence of the malefic planets Uranus and Neptune. Neptune of poisons is opposite Pluto coruler of the ascendant in the 7th of doctors, and opposite Jupiter ruling liver diseases and blood. The Sun is in applying combustion with Pluto, indicating severe health problems, and incurable Uranus is in the same degree as the Nodes, which is a catastrophe. Uranus is separating from an opposition to the Sun of vitality, and a square between the Moon and Uranus in the 1st indicates an incurable disaease. Saturn is in its fall in Aries and afflicts the 6th house, so this definitely indicates a disease by its unlucky presence. Saturn squares malefic Mars, ruler of the 1st and the 6th, peregrine in Leo. From this it is easy to see that Saturn determines the illness or body part affected.

Aries on the 6th indicates the head and Saturn in Aries indicates the chest.
Mars ruler of the ascendant and the 6th in Leo indicates the heart.

The ruler of the ascendant is Mars, which has recently separated from a square to Saturn, both of them in Cardinal Signs at the time of the square. Mars was previously in its fall in Cancer, which represents the chest and stomach. From this I concluded that the body parts affected were the head, chest, heart and stomach, and that the cause of this illness and misery was an obstruction due to an infection in the chest and stomach. Saturn is the principal significator of the disease. It is in its own terms in Aries, and the Moon coruler 1st is in the 4th in Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, and applies to a sextile to Saturn. This indicates blockages and obstructions, and such  diseases causing them and might therefore cause illness in the head and chest. Your physicians know best what diseases a man might expect in those areas, and might result from causes such as previously stated.
Mars ruler of the ascendant is also in the terms of Saturn, and the Moon is in the terms of Mars is applying to a square to the Sun peregrine in Taurus also in the terms of Mars. Liver disease was a secondary cause of this doctor’s illness. When I came to speak to him, he was afflicted with great pain and rumbling in the head, very silent, dull and sad, and sleep deprived. He had a very dry cough and complained of great weakness and pain in the chest, and in the heart. His complexion was haggard and yellow, as if there were indications of jaundice. He also had a case of lingering consumption or tuberculosis, and he seemed completely exhausted. With the Moon in the Air Sign Aquarius he was aching in every joint. Scorpio ascending indicates the genitals and bladder stones, and the Moon in Aquarius indicates the genitals and their diseases. He had difficulty in urinating, and discharged red gravel and blood, and had great pain in those parts. Since I myself have little knowledge of medicine, I advised him to prescribe himself such medicines that are gently warming, moist, and pleasant, and thereby prolong his life. The Moon in the 4th of endings square the Sun indicates sickness until death, and he died on the 24th of August.
Saturn being the planetary cause of the disease showed that it would be permanent, or at least very lengthy, because Saturn is a very slow moving planet. All the angles of the chart are fixed, and the Moon and Sun are both in fixed signs, in applying square, and both in the terms of a Malefic. Mars ruler of the ascendant and of the 6th is in a fixed sign, and all these indicators predict the length of the illness. The antiscion of Mars is very close to the Sun, there by afflicting it, since the Sun is the luminary above the horizon. The last aspect of the Moon is a square to Pluto, coruler 1st and natural ruler of death, indicating the end of life. The Sun is in applying combustion to Pluto coruler 1st, indicating his death.

Example 2:

Will the sick person recover or die, and what is his illness?

The ascending sign is Virgo, and the 1st house is afflicted by the presence of Mars, partly ruler of the 8th house of death. From the sign on the cusp of the 6th we have to obtain the cause of the illness and the body part affected. Aquarius is the sign on the cusp of the 6th, it is fixed, and the 6th house is afflicted by the presence of the South Node. Saturn ruler 6th is in Taurus in an Earth Sign and square the Sun/Venus combustion, indicating infected kidneys. It is of the same nature and element as Virgo, the rising sign. The Moon, general significator in all diseases is afflicted by conjunction to Mars in the 1st. Mars in an Earth Sign together with the other significators indicates problems with the spleen, intestinal gas, and severe obstructions of the bowels or small intestine. There is likely to be low-level fever and a variable pulse, and since the Moon and Mars are conjunct in the 1st house, this indicates that the patient was affected by problems in the head. He suffered from headaches, insomnia and restless sleep. I persuaded the man to make his peace with God and to settle his financial affairs because I could not see how he could possibly live more than another ten or twelve days.

My reason for this conclusion is that all his significators indicated nothing but death.

1. The Sun, the luminary above the horizon at the time of the question and the source of all vital power was afflicted by an exact square to Saturn and a combustion with Venus, dispositor of Saturn. Saturn is ruler of the 6th of illness in the fixed sign of Taurus.

2. The ascendant was extremely afflicted by the presence of malefic Mars in the 1st house conjunct Moon coruler 1st. Mars is naturally malefic and ruler of most of the 8th house and is peregrine in Virgo.

3. The Moon is very near the tail of the lion, the fixed star Denebola at 16 Virgo and afflicted by the negative influence of Mars in the 1st house that indicates life.

4. The Moon was separating from a sextile to Mercury, ruler of the ascendant and transferred or translated its energy to Jupiter ruler of the 8th of death. Mercury squares the Part of Fortune and is in mutual reception with the Moon, but the Moon’s applying square to Jupiter prevents the reception from being useful.

5. Jupiter ruler 7th of doctors is in its detriment in Gemini in the 10th of treatment. The physician is likely to be incompetent and his treatment inappropriate.

6. Neptune coruler 7th of doctors is in the endings 4th house in its fall in Sagittarius opposite Pluto ruler of the 4th peregrine in Gemini in the 10th of treatment. The doctor’s treatment is likely to lead to the end or death of the patient.

The patient died on the 7th of August, when transiting Mercury came to an exact conjunction or combustion of the Sun and a square to Saturn. The Moon at the time of death was conjunct the 6th house cusp opposite the Sun on the 12th house cusp. The last aspect of the Moon is a square to Jupiter ruler of the 8th of death, indicating the death of the patient.

Example 3 – Crisis Days

Will the patient live or die, and what is her illness?
The Moon is Fast

This is the Illness Chart or First Decumbiture of a young servant woman who fell ill at the time and date indicated. Venus ruler 1st is in Sagittarius in the 3rd sextile the ascendant, so she is an honest and faithful person. The cause of the disease lay hidden or at least was very obscure with so many planets below the horizon. She was the cause of her own illness with Jupiter ruler 6th and dispositor of Venus in its detriment in Virgo in the misfortunate 12th. The water sign Pisces ruling feet is on the cusp of the 6th so wet and cold feet was the cause of her illness. Jupiter in the 12th in Virgo indicates infected blood and problems with the bowels or intestines. Venus conjunct Antares shows a high and dangerous fever, as does the Sun/Mars combustion. Saturn ruler 4th is retrograde in Taurus conjunct the malefic fixed star Alcyone.
The Sun and Mars in the 4th conjunct the South Node square the ascendant show the intensity of the disease, danger of poison, and a bad end to the illness. Mars trines Jupiter, and this indicates hot blood and a very high fever. Her physician is indicated by Mars ruler 7th, in exaltation in Capricorn conjunct the malefic South Node and square the ascendant, and he was certainly an ignorant and incompetent doctor. Mars also rules the 8th house of death, so he was likely to cause her to die. Her disease was the smallpox, ruled by Venus and Mars, and it caused severe constipation. She had no bowel movements for a week. I prescribed a clyster enema every day otherwise she certainly would have died. The physician had prescribed scammony, a strong laxative to purge her, which only increased her fever and poisoned her body leaving her severely disfigured. She developed aches and swellings in her knees, which continued to her dying day.
As to the first question, Mars ruler of the 8th of death conjuncts the Sun, and both of them square the ascendant. The Mars/Sun conjunction trine Jupiter indicates very high fever and infected or poisoned blood. Neptune of poisons is coruler 6th opposite deadly Pluto and conjunct incurable Uranus also indicates the poisoning through drugs. These aspects all indicate death. Whenever transiting Moon made aspects to Mars in the chart, the illness got worse. That she will live is clear, since the Moon sextiles Jupiter, and Venus ruler ascendant is not afflicted, though it is peregrine it sextiles the ascendant and is in a sign ruled by a Benefic. As to the second question, the angles all being Cardinal and the Moon swift in motion and sextile Jupiter indicate a short illness. The ruler of the ascendant and the ruler of the 6th both being stationary prolong the illness. When looked at as an acute illness, it was longer than expected but it was shorter than feared. The ruler of the ascendant going stationary direct shows her willingness to change her doctor, and the ruler of the 6th going stationary retrograde prolongs the disease.
The first judicial time was when the Moon came to 26 Sagittarius 11 , semi-square its own position in the Illness Chart. This is called a judicial time because the disease will now show its true colours, so that you may judge what it is and what to do about it. On the 25th of December at 9:30 AM, the Moon was semi-square its own position, Mercury was on the ascendant in Capricorn, and the small pox came out visibly on her body.

When the Moon makes an easy aspect to its own chart position, this is called an intercidental time, or a time to intercede and give medicine, and there is usually some remission in the disease. The Moon came to 11 Capricorn 11  sextile its position in the chart on the 26th December at 1:50 PM. Cold Saturn is on the cusp of the ascendant, and cold Venus on the descendant, and she had the chills.

The first crisis came on the 29th of December just after midnight, with the Moon in Aquarius square its own position, and the chart is much as it was at the time of first lying down. The Moon separates from a sextile to Venus and applies to a square to Saturn ruler 4th. The Moon carries or translates the light from Venus ruler ascendant to Saturn. This is the time of greatest danger in her disease, and her battle for life left her spent and exhausted. The Sun at this time was in mutually applying trine to Jupiter, and so the small pox got better.

The second crisis came on the 5 January 1648 at 11:30 AM, Moon opposite Moon. The Moon was in its exaltation in Taurus, trining the Sun and Mercury, and the fever left her. At the third crisis, the waning square of the Moon, on the 12th of January she was so much better that she travelled abroad. She died two years later of unrelated causes.

HERMES TRISMEGISTUS ON THE ILLNESS CHART

The energy of the seven planets is distributed into the various organs of the body, even while the fetus is still growing in the mother’s womb. The influence of the planets and the twelve signs is certainly no less when the child is born, and since the head comes out first, we assign the head to the rulership of Aries.

The senses are ruled by the seven planets as follows:

Mercury rules vision.
The Sun rules the right eye, and the Moon the left eye.
Saturn  rules the sense of hearing and the ears.
Mars/Saturn rules the left ear and Jupiter/Saturn the right one
Venus rules touch
Mercury rules smell
Mars rules taste

If in the natal chart an afflicted planet rules a body part, then that organ will have a defect or imperfection. The four general body parts or sections are the head, chest, abdomen, and hands and feet. If a planet that rules any of these principal sections is unfortunate and badly aspected at birth, then the same planet causes defects in all those body parts contained in that section, or some of the major organs in that section. If either the Sun or Moon is badly placed or weak, then the eyes are affected. If Saturn is badly placed, then the teeth and sense of hearing are affected. When Mercury is afflicted, then there is a defect in the tongue causing stammering or other speech defects. Use the same method of analysis to look at the chest, lungs, liver, spleen, heart or the intestines and internal organs to see if they are defective or diseased from birth.
When looking at the hands and feet see if the fingers, toes or nails are deformed or weakened by the aspect of some strong malefic planet. Such defects can be cured if appropriate medicines are applied, and the disease must be resisted according to the afflicting aspects of planets contrary in nature and effect to the significator. Saturn rules medicines that cool or refrigerate and promote dryness or drying up. Mercury rules medicines that congeal and cause gas. Mars rules medicines that cause increased temperature and warming, since it heats and produces blood. Jupiter and Venus  rule medicines that bind or coagulate and soften or soothe the body and cure ulcers. The Moon  helps or strengthens all planets to which it applies, whether they are good or bad.
Those who would like to cure the sick or heal the lame should carefully consider the Illness Chart.. The planets and their essential dignity by sign or position and their mutual aspects must be carefully considered, for without the cumulative effect of these planets nothing can be determined either healthy or diseased. No patient can possibly be cured by the effort of his doctor alone, no matter how well educated he may be, without the benevolent configuration or aspects of the planets and their dignity by sign. He will either die because he lacks benefic aspects, or recover and be preserved by their kind influence.
If the exact moment of the patient's first falling sick cannot be known, then carefully look at a chart erected for the time the patient first consulted a physician. Carefully observe from which planet the Moon has separated, to which it applies, and which planets it conjuncts, squares or opposes. If the Moon is aspected by Malefics, then the disease could be fatal, but if the Moon is aspected by Benefics, then the patient will obtain a remedy very quickly. See if the Moon is fast in motion and increasing in light, or neither or both. After the Moon’s conjunction with the Sun it waxes in light and increases its speed of motion. If hard aspects to Mars should afflict the Moon, before it comes to an opposition to the Sun, and no easy aspects from Benefics intervene, then this indicates a fatal or pernicious illness. But if the Moon conjoins or aspects Benefics, then the patient will recover even though he may have expected to die of his illness. But if the Moon decreases in speed and wanes in light, and if it is afflicted by hard aspects to Saturn, then the disease is fatal and not curable. If the Moon has already opposed Saturn, then the illness will become weaker. If the Moon applies to Benefics, then the illness will soon be cured. When the Moon increases in light and speed, then the strength of the illness increases. When the Moon slows down then the illness diminishes. This ought to be carefully considered when first looking at the Illness Chart.
Those who at the time of first falling sick are afflicted by hard aspects to Saturn or Mercury are usually very tired and drowsy and unwilling to move the affected body parts. They suffer from severe chills, and are weakened by unusual discharges. The disease grows worse very slowly, nor will the patient wake up very easily despite being forced to do so. The patients tend to be silent and fearful, and ask for hot compresses or medicines in order to warm up. He prefers to stay in the dark, and avoid bright light. The patient sighs or moans continually, gently draws in his breath or sucks it in greedily and is short winded. The pulse is fast and hard, and warm compresses applied to the patient give great comfort, or the patient may have a feeble pulse. If the surface of the body is cold and dry, then the attending physician ought to apply such medicines that naturally warm, soothe and bind.
A patient who falls sick under Malefic configurations of the Sun and Mars appears to be mentally disturbed, falling prey to hallucinations and delirium, and is aggressive and demanding in his behaviour. The patient is prone to angry outbursts, makes a lot of fuss and noise, is very critical and lies staring at the ceiling. The patient uses foul language to attack people indiscriminately. The body surface and skin is inflamed and very hot and feverish. He is always thirsty because of his fever and has a parched and rough tongue. He demands wine and cold water, a cool bath and has no appetite for meat and other food. The patient has a fast and very weak pulse, and his face is red and inflamed and he may be bothered by constipation.
For the recovery of such patients, prescribe medicines that evacuate and purge the body, and administer such other remedies as the nature of the illness requires. The medicines that are agreeable with the nature of Mars are opposite to the nature of Saturn , which is not warm and soothing and does not dissolve obstructions. Medicines that naturally agree with Saturn are opposite to the nature of Mars. Saturn rules medicines that refrigerate or cool, are astringent or constricting or binding. All illnesses that cause trembling and irregularity of the heart, or that affect the stomach, arteries, veins and joints originate from the hard aspects of the Sun and Mars. Saturn and Mercury cause continued fevers and convulsions, boils and ulcers and infection of the lungs or eyes. Against such illnesses, medicines that cool are the most appropriate.

To cure and recover from those diseases that have Saturn or Mercury as their root cause, medicines that naturally heat and soothe must be administered. But in order to cure diseases ruled by the Sun or Mars  the physician must apply such remedies that naturally cooling and refreshing.

The Moon in the Illness Chart

If the Moon in the Illness Chart is decreasing in light and speed, in any of the twelve signs and afflicted by hard aspects to Saturn, then the patient may have any or more of the following diseases.

Moon in Conjunction, Opposition or Square to Saturn

The Moon in Aries
Headaches or a heaviness or stuffiness in the head, post nasal drip of mucus into the throat and windpipe, ringing in the ears, runny nose, tiredness or dullness of the eyes, weak pulse, and mental exhaustion, upset stomach, unusual cold sweat, chills and fevers, all of these are more problematic at night than the day. If the Moon does not receive a good aspect from a Benefic, then the patient may die. Purging the stomach and bowels relieves the distress.

The Moon in Taurus
Fevers result from the obstruction or infection of the cardiac veins (arteriosclerosis) and arteries, or the inner parts of the heart, liver and lungs. The blockage is brought on by too much sweet or fatty food, the pulse is fast and high but irregular, and there is a general swelling of the body through obesity or water retention. There may be an infection of the lungs, and if the Moon does not receive an aspect from the Benefics, then the patient may live no longer than fourteen days. But if the Moon makes a good aspect to the Benefics, then the patient may recover despite expectations to the contrary. Medicines that dissolve obstructions are good.

The Moon in Gemini
The cause of the disease is a tired and weary mind, resulting from too much stress due to too many responsibilities. Or the patient is tired from too much travel, or too much exercise. There is usually a low fever, and there are aches and pains all over the body, but mainly in the joints. The vital signs are generally weak when the Moon is in Gemini, and the patient is inclined to tuberculosis, pneumonia, pleurisy or other respiratory infections. The pulse is weak and slow, the patient sweats profusely, and the illness is worse at night. If both Mars and Saturn afflict the Moon at the same time, then the patient is unlikely to survive for more than ten days. If a favourable aspect from Venus or Jupiter intervenes, then the patient may eventually recover. Saturn afflictions may also indicate an infected spleen.

The Moon in Cancer
There are problems with stubborn chest infections and excess secretions from inflamed mucus membranes and the lungs, and a coughing up or discharge of thick phlegm. The patient suffers from coughs, runny nose and excess saliva, laryngitis and colds. The windpipe and airways are narrowed and obstructed by infected tissue or mucus, there is a low fever and daily aches, which decrease to recur every four days. There may also be an infection in the kidneys or the genitals. If the Moon is decreasing in light and conjunct Saturn, then the illness will continue for a long time, and if at the same time the ruler of the ascendant is impeded by the ruler of the 8th, then there is little hope of recovery.

The Moon in Leo
The illness is caused by an infection of the blood, and the patient will suffer from a violent high fever and chest infections, a racing heart or pulse, and feeling hot internally and externally. Sometimes the patient suffers from kidney stones, skipped heartbeats and fainting, and if the illness continues for a long time, then the patient is in danger of the infection spreading to the liver. Such medicines that make the patient sweat and feel hot are good for these illnesses. When the Moon comes to the opposition of Saturn, and the conjunction, trine or sextile of Venus or Jupiter do not intervene to help, then sometimes the patient will die.

The Moon in Virgo
The illness is caused by infections and upset of the stomach and digestive system, and there is an obstruction of the bowels and intestines, or food poisoning. There are sharp shooting pains under the ribs, unusual fevers, and many times the patient suffers from wind colic or gas. There may be gout or aches in thighs and feet, and kidney infections with bloody discharges in the urine. Medicines that soothe and bind the patient are the appropriate treatment for the sick. With the Moon in h the illness will continue for a long time, since h is an earth sign and Saturn is slow.

The Moon in Libra
The illness is caused by an excess consumption of alcohol and food or food poisoning through spoiled food. There may have been sexual excess or promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases, or an infection in the chest and head. There is often a loss of appetite, an upset stomach, coughing and sore throat, and a thick mucus discharge. The patient may have aching joints, especially in the knees and thighs, and itching in those areas which brings a fear of sciatica.

The Moon in Scorpio
The illness is in the anus or bowels, usually ulcers or haemorrhoids, or some rash, or sores or infection of the genitals. If the Moon and Saturn  are in Scorpio at the time of the question, then there is no retention of urine, but the patient may be suffering from kidney stones, or swelling, or dropsy which is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body cavity. There may also be swelling around the knees and legs. There may be abnormal discharges, which in a man might indicate sexually transmitted diseases, and in a woman an abnormally heavy menstrual period.

The Moon  in Sagittarius
The patient suffers from discharges of thin mucus, has pain in his joints and arteries, and needs to watch for high fever. He may go through recurring cycles of fever and chills. Medicines that mitigate fever and make the patient sweat are good for people who fall sick under this aspect. The patient may have metabolic poisons produced by infected organs such as the liver or kidneys, or suffer injuries from violent exercise, followed by exposure to cold resulting in illness. After the opposition of the Moon to Saturn, the patient may suffer from gout, or a tumour or swelling of the hands, thighs or feet. If Mars makes any hard aspects to the Moon as well as Saturn at the time of falling ill, then the patient is likely to have a very high and burning fever.

The Moon in Capricorn
Here there are no predictable symptoms, jaundice is common, the patient feels nauseous and has a desire to vomit. There is a weakness of the heart, a swelling or puffing up of the tissues, an upset stomach, and recurring fevers. There may be a chest infection, some sores or boils and sore joints in hands and fingers. Binding and obstructive medicines are useful, and the patients pulse skips beats and is weak and slow. The patient is inclined to yellow jaundice, the face is haggard and the body lean, and the whole body is affected. The disease is very hard to cure even by the most skilled doctors, and the patient seems to have very low blood circulation, and his blood is infected to a high degree.

The Moon in Aquarius
The illness is generally due to overwork, putting stress on both body and mind. The patient needs the refreshment of a few good nights sleep and rest from his labours. The illness comes and goes until the Moon is past the opposition to its own position, and if the Benefics have any aspect to the Moon, then the patient will recover. The patient may have ringing in his head or ears, with fainting and irregular heart beats. There may be problems such as a sore throat, or swollen glands, and he may be in danger of suffocation.

The Moon in Pisces
The illness is caused by exposure to damp and cold, and the patient suffers from continual fevers, indulges in a lot of moaning or sighing, has shooting pains in his chest, and dilation of the arteries of the heart. The throat is filled with thick phlegm, and the patient has a harsh cough and chest infection, and he coughs up a watery discharge or mucous. Medicines that heat and soothe are good in theses cases.

Moon in  Conjunction, Opposition or Square to Mars

The Moon in Aries
The illness is most likely an infection of the membrane around the brain, or encephalitis. There is continuous fever, restlessness and an inability to lie still. The patient may have an extremely dry and thirsty mouth and tongue, an inflamed or infected liver and a chest infection. A high and irregular pulse and the high fever are indications that convulsions and fainting should be watched for. If the Moon after separating from the hard aspect to Mars applies to a hard aspect to u, decreasing in light and slow in motion, then there is little hope for survival. The patient is delirious and seems driven insane by his illness, and he may have extreme pain in his belly or small intestine due to some infection or obstruction.

The Moon in Taurus
The patient has infected blood, continual fever, and the whole body has obstructions or blockages. There may be an inflammation of the throat, neck, or back part of the neck or throat. There are aching joints and bones, restless sleep or insomnia, and an insatiable desire for cold water or wine. The patient may be suffering from kidney stones or an enlarged prostate, which shuts off or obstructs the flow of urine. There may be a very sore throat and hoarseness, laryngitis or infected tonsils. Medicines that moderately cool the patient and reduce the fever are good.

The Moon in Gemini
The patient has a dangerously high fever, a high and irregular pulse, and the blood is too hot and needs to be cooled. There may be various obstructions, and many of the organs of the body are infected or at least affected by the illness, since the infection is carried in the bloodstream. There are pains all over the body rather than being localized in one organ, and the joints in legs and arms are aching. There may be an infection of the kidneys, or kidney stones, and the patient may pass blood in the urine or spit up blood from his lungs.

The Moon in Cancer
There is an infection in the stomach, and the patient has eaten too much and vomits, or he has food poisoning or gastroenteritis and his stomach may feel as if it had turned inside out. Usually the patient has overindulged in food or alcoholic drink, and the problem is resolved through vomiting. Sometimes there is a rotten cough, pneumonia, tuberculosis or an infection of the lungs, and the patient spits up blood.

The Moon in Leo
There is high blood pressure and a very high fever, a weak pulse, and delirium brought on by feverish hallucinations. The patient has a loss of appetite, feels very tired and drowsy, and has a pain in the heart or an irregular heartbeat. There is a danger of contracting tuberculosis, and the patient usually dies about the 9th day after first falling ill if there are other complications as well. The fever is very high, and the patient hallucinates and seems to be stark raving mad. This may be due to pleurisy, pneumonia or tuberculosis.  The patient feels weak and is likely to faint, and the heart is very much affected. This placement of the Moon can be the most dangerous in the zodiac.

The Moon in Virgo
There is an infection or digestive upset in the belly, and there is a lot of misery with the Moon in this position. There is a low fever, bloody discharges in the urine or liver infections and jaundice. The pulse is irregular, and the patient has revulsion for food and frequently vomits. Unless the Benefics intervene, the patient usually dies within a month. The patient may suffer from gas or colic and is weak in the legs or ankles. The illness is very difficult to cure with the Moon here.

The Moon in Libra
The patient has very hot blood and too high a fever, and a very rapid pulse. He has insomnia and is very restless, and his whole body is hot and inflamed. The cause is usually too much food or food poisoning, or infected kidneys or kidney stones. Cooling medicines or cold baths are best for such illnesses, since the infection affects the whole body with a hot burning fever.

The Moon in Scorpio
There are usually minor or major problems with the genitals and sexually transmitted diseases. Or there is often a rash, pimples, haemorrhoids or measles in children. The patient may have a stuffy and runny nose, or a more serious infection in the sinuses. If the patient is young and sexually active, then expect gonorrhoea, syphilis or rashes due to a yeast or fungus infection of the genitals. Often the patient has scabs, rashes, or other skin eruptions. Medicines that warm and soothe are good for such illnesses. If the patient appears to be or claims to be faithful to the marriage partner, then the spouse must be suspected as the carrier of the disease.

The Moon in Sagittarius
The patient may suffer because of gluttony, or too much food and wine. He suffers from high fevers, and may have liver problems such as cirrhosis or jaundice, or diarrhea due to food poisoning. The pulse is slow and faint, and the heart beats very weakly. If the patient survives the first seven days, or until the Moon squares its position in the chart, then there is some hope of recovery. The patient may have overheated blood due to too much exercise, and may have a high burning fever. There may be gout in the joints, or rashes and other skin eruptions. Sometimes there is a sore throat and infected eyes with a rheumy discharge.

The Moon in Capricorn
There is not a general or reliable general set of symptoms, and no easy cure. There is a lack of appetite, a tendency to vomit, a weakness or queasy feeling in the stomach, and a swelling or puffing up of the body tissues. Diarrhoea is common with continual or recurring fever, and an inflammation or infection of the chest. Some rashes or skin eruptions are common, and there is a stiffening of the joints of fingers and hands.  Medicines that bind and act as a diuretic to reduce swelling and water retention are useful, and the pulse is irregular and slow. The patient may have jaundice, the face and appearance is very thin, and the body is far too lean and skinny. The illness will be very difficult to cure by even the most competent doctor. The blood circulation is low, and the blood is infected to a very high degree.

The Moon in Aquarius

If the Moon is slow and decreasing in light then the illness is caused by a severe and very dangerous infection. If the Moon makes a good aspect to another planet at the time it squares or opposes its own position in the chart, then the patient is generally better after about twenty days. There may be pain in the heart and fainting and a very high and dangerous fever. The blood swells in all the veins, and the pulse rate is high. Sometimes the patient has great pains in the chest, and has difficulty in breathing. A severe chest cold or pneumonia should be suspected.

The Moon in Pisces
If the Moon is increasing in light and is fast in motion, then the illness is caused by swallowing food too quickly or from drinking too much. The illness is worse at night than it is in the day, and the patient may suffer from a high burning fever and the delirium and hallucinations this causes. The patient is very thirsty and asks for cold water or wine. He may have a violent case of diarrhea and great pain in the belly. Or he may have a harsh cough and a discharge of mucus or rheum from the head or throat. The patient has difficulty breathing and chokes due to the swollen throat. His belly is swollen and he may be in danger of dropsy due to fluid retention in his abdominal cavity.
