The people of Umuofia cut up the yams for cooking so the people could have food to eat. The reason why they cut up the yams every day is because they grow yams and have plenty to eat. Thats there daily acvtivity because they grow them and thats all they cook. They can make many diffrent things with the yams like foo-foo, yam pourage and other things.
Okonkwo spent the next few days preparing his seed yams. The reason for the preparing of the yams is to see wether it was good for sowing. Sometimes he decided that a yam was too big to be sown as one seed and he split it deftly along its length with his sharp knife. Okonkwo gave yams to Nwoye and Ikemefuna to prepare after they got the yams from the field.
The feast of yams was approaching and Umuofia was in a festival mood. It was an occasion for giving thanks to Ani, the earth goddess and the source of all fertality. Ali played a greater part in the life of the people than any other diety. She was the ultimate judge of morality and conduct.
