The first belief makes it obvious that they are paranoid of evil spirits. Also,that they are a little nuts. In the statement "children were warned not to whistle at night for fear of evil spirits"(9),it shows that the people of Umuofia have gotten very detailed in these superstitions. To them, night time is more likely to bring about evil spirits.

"No work is done during the week of peace. People call on their neighbors (31)", is a statement that explains their beliefs as superstitious. The people of Umuofia believe that if they spend the whole week before harvest, in peace that will have a successful harvest. They are not to beat their wives, and they are nice and peaceful to everyone. Neighbors invite eachother over to drink palm-wine.

"As they deliberated they could hear the mother of spirits walling for her son (187)", is a belief that there is a form of guilt that you will receive. It is a public form of guilt. Everyone else is hearing the mother also. The belief is that if something goes wrong in your life, everyone will know about it. You will feel major guilt. Also, you will feel so humiliated that you will hopefully improve your judgement next time.
