The people of Umiofia had many morals and values. The breaking
of the kola nut was a tradition used by all of the clansman in Umiofia
and in many of the other villages. When people came to visit, before they
could coverse about things going on in the clan, the man of the hut would
break th kola and pass some to the others to eat. Then they would pray
to their ancestors for life and protection against their enemies.
The people in the villages had great respect for the earth goddess,Ani,
and had laws to abide by-for instence, it was a crime against her to kill
a clans man. When such a crime was commited, the guilty must leave the village,
usualy returning to his mothers village. In the case that the murdered was
a man, then the guilty would be vanished forever. If the dead were considered
woman, then the guilty were only forced to leave for seven years. In Okonkwos
situation, he had killed a young boy,the boy was still young enough to be
considered a woman,so he was only forced to leave the village for seven years.
The people of the village felt many things were evil and needed to be seperated
from the everyday life of the village.Such evil things were-a clansman who dies of
starvation, for being to lazy to find himself food, or babies born with a twin. The place
where the villagers disposed of these "evil" things was called the Evil Forest.this place was
thought of the unholly earth where all evil things were sent to be damned.
