Welcome to your new culture!  Over the next several weeks, you and your group will be reading a version of Antigone written by an author of “your” culture.  Together you will analyze the play and present your findings to the class in a variety of formats, receiving both individual and group grades.

Your responsibilities:

• Read the play
• Discuss the play with members of your culture
• Work with your culture to visually represent your culture and your version of the play on your culture’s wall.  Every member must contribute something to the wall.
• Complete a description of characters, summary and commentary of a section, or study guide questions for your group’s Cliff Notes.  The culture will decide together who is responsible for what.
• Write an essay on a theme or analysis of a character in the play.  Everyone must write an essay.
• Type what you have done that will go into your culture’s Web page
• Participate in your culture’s living re-creation of the play
• Take a test on the play

• Decide on a contact member
• Create a temporary time schedule and list of individual’s responsibilities
• Research the modern culture
• Research the author
• Create a visual representation of your culture, your author of Antigone, and the events in Antigone on your wall
• Compile Cliff’s Notes for your version of Antigone
• Create a Web page using the information in your Cliff’s Notes
• Create a 10 minute version of Antigone for presentation to the class

The Wall – 200 Points

• Modern information about the culture – Location in the world, flag, governmental leaders, language(s) spoken, holidays, foods, customs, significant historical events in last 500 years (approx. 10)  50 Points
• Biography of author – Birth, death, major writings, personal events in his life, political events that may have affected his writings  50 Points
• Visual representation of the play – Cover the play from beginning to end with the major events.  You may choose to illustrate particular scenes and include particular quotes.  Someone who walks to your wall who has not read the play, should be able to briefly explain what is going on.   Be creative!!!  100 Points

• Biography of author and list of characters and brief description of their roles in the play – 50 Points
• Plot summaries and commentaries – 50 Points each/ 300 Points Total

Divide the play into 6 main sections (one person is to complete a section):

Write a summary (8-10 sentences describing the sequence of events) for each section.

b. Description of conflicts – between whom, type (man vs. ____)
c. Characters – directly/indirectly characterized, static/dynamic
d. Literary techniques – foreshadowing, symbolism, examples of theme
• Literary technique essay – 240 Points (30 Points for each person’s paper)
• Character analysis - Choose one character and analyze his/her role in the play and how he/she affected the outcome of the play
• Theme - Choose a recurring idea - could be journey, power, things are not what they appear to be, childhood trauma, fate etc.  Provide examples from the novel.
• Bloom’s Taxonomy questions – 50 Points – 3 questions per level
• Knowledge - recognize or recall information (identify, define, who, what, when)
• Comprehension - describe, rephrase, compare/contrast, explain, find main idea
• Application - classify, select, choose, apply, (previously learned information)
• Analysis - why, analyze, conclude, distinguish, detect, determine a conclusion
• Synthesis - construct, produce, plan, design, predict, create, change
• Evaluation - judge, argue, appraise, do you agree, which is better

In a 10 minute performance, recreate the events that occur in the play.  You may choose to perform live, on video tape, or with the use of puppets.  Grading will be based on accuracy, use of time, creativity, and ability to be understood by peers.

  Work completed that day in class and the previous night at home to be documented and initialed by contact for group.
• Individual grade on Cliff’s Notes work – 50 Points
  While your work will be a contribution to a group grade, the grade earned on the portion of work you completed will be entered as an individual grade.
• Personal Essay – 100 Points
• Abstract – 50 Points (to be discussed and completed in class)
• Antigone Test – 200 Points
