Interdiscipilary Project for "Sonnet 29"

"Sonnet 29" tells the story of a man who is so depressed and miserable that he considers himself to be almost worthless, but when he thinks about the woman he loves, everything else in the world seems to disappear. He has no worries when he thinks about her. His love for her is all he needs.

Celine Dion's song "Then You Look At Me" is about a woman who is going through life taking things a day at a time while trying to figure out the point of her life. She's trying to find herself and the meaning of her life. Then, when her true love looks at her, she finds everything that she has been searching for.

"Sonnet 29" and "Then You Look At Me"  both tell the story of one lover being "lost" and the other lover unknowingly helping them to find their way. Whether it is a look from or a thought about their true loves, just knowing that they have their true loves is enough to make all of their problems obsolete. In "Sonnet 29", the speaker says, "Haply I think on the, and then my state, like to the lark at break of day arising from sullen earth, sings hymns at Heaven's gates"(10-13). Just one thought of his love makes him see his life in a whole new light. Celine Dion sings in "Then You Look At Me", "Then you look at me, and I always see what I have been searching for. I'm lost as can be then you look at me, and I am not lost anymore"(5- 10). One look makes her realize that she is no longer lost. Everything that she has been searching for is right in front of her. Both works are similar because they tell very romantic tales of love conquering over all. For both speakers, all they needed was love.

James Horner. "Then You Look At Me". All The Way... A Decade of Song. Sony. 550 Music, 1999

All the Way... A Decade of Song is a collection of both hit songs and new songs from Celine Dion. The collection, as well as many of Dion's previous albums, would be a good source to look at for connections to any romantic poem or any other genre.
