The Grey I Now See Before Me

Bundled on frigid Monday mornings
the grey i am lost in is deep within my heart;
the green of my youth lost forever
in a shallow sea of self-pity, that has
for half of my life been drowning me
in the grey I now see before me.

The cityscape yawns a tired welcome
to the weekday world that has left it alone
for two whole days while couples and children
ran free on his streets, having no way of
knowing the grey I now see before me.

Winter’s chill digs harshly at my chest;
daggers cleaving my lungs while
Antarctic wind brutally beats my face
into submission as I lower my head in fear
of facing the grey I now see before me.

The cool brown edge containing the
flowering bloom of coal at the core
of your eyes has burst forth at our
equinox into bloom; a brilliant sea
of green erupting, the life in my heart
screaming in joy at the warmth now
pouring from the green I now see before me.

Spring clawing out of hard December
fields, hope rising within the world as
the grey slowly fades, and the sun shines
brightly teasing us with her warmth;
reborn life, and newborn joy, holding
hands with lush April beauty
growing from the green I now see before me.

I swim forever in your eyes,
and as they have warmed my heart
so have they changed my life.
The most beautiful heart revealed,
as they move slowly, passionately
bringing a smile as they come;
sweeping my pain away in the slow
transition to the green I now see before me.

The City is beaming on this day of Our Lord
as We quietly sit nuzzling in each other’s arms;
watching children and couples as they
run down his streets. Did you see?
He gave us a wink, a silent thanks for briefly
removing the grey he too frequently sees before him.
