That time was the tribe of the Amazons which it is reported was made up all of women. They had the greatest knowledge of military science. Still they are daring to battle with men. Hippolyte, the Queen of the Amazons, had the most well known belt, which Mars had given her. Admeta also, Eurystheus's daughter, desired fame from this belt and she desired very much to possess it. Eurystheus therefore ordered Hercules to gather troops and to wage war with the Amazons. He sent that message into all regions. After Hercules had convened a large crowd he assigned those who had the greatest practice in warfare. These men disembarked the cause by a journey.
The strongest of them, influenced by that power, determined to make the journey with them. Then he convinced them to board the ship with he and after a few days he arrived at the mouth of the Thermodontis River. When he came into the territory of the Amazons, he sent a message to Hippolyte; he gave the journey's cause and demanded the belt. Hippolyte herself was willing to trade the belt, because she had received the courageous fame of Hercules, but the remaining Amazons were not willing to grant the belt to him and refused. Hercules, where they have orders, attempted deciding the fortune by waging war. The nearest day he led out his troops, selected a suitable place and called out to the enemy to fight. The Amazons also had led their troops out from the camp.
The swamp was not great training among both; neither was willing to do then the beginning of crossing. At last Hercules had given the sign, where he had crossed the swamp, the battle commenced. The Amazons endured the stronger man's attack, and on the contrary all the men shoed the greatest bravery ****; they killed many men, the killed many women in battle. In fact the men new to the fight with the tribe had been terrified but now were showing great virtue. The women enjoyed it, but Hercules began to despair from his fortune. Therefore he strongly encouraged the soldiers.
He strengthened all friends by means of his words, and at last at sunset the women asked safety by means of flight. Many however took wounds while they fled, in which number was Hippolyte. Hercules showed the captive the greatest mercy, and after accepted the belt, and he gave freedom to all the Amazons.
Then he led back his companions to the sea and hastened setting out into Greece. Did he give the belt, which Mars gave to the strong queen, to the king's daughter Adameta?
