Labor Eight: The Man-eating Horses of Diomedes



After he had returned from the island of Crete, Hercules was sent by Eurystheus into Thracias and ordered to bring back the Diomedian horses. These horses devoured the flesh of men; Diomedes, however, the cruelest man, threw all foreigners, who came in his region to it. Hercules therefore hastened with great speed into Thracia and demanded these horses from Diomedes. Diomedes then was unwilling to do this and Hercules killed him because he was moved by anger. His dad body was ordered thrown to the horses. Thus he who had killed formerly man with torture, was killed himself by means of his torture. When he had announced this to all, all who lived in this region, they were greatly moved with large joy. Hercules lead the horses onto the ship; thereafter without delay he released and….
