After the killing of the Hydra was announced to Eurystheus, the greatest terror seized his spirit. He believed that to hold him the man in his reign with great danger. Therefore he ordered Hercules to seize a certain deer, whose horns it was said were gold. This incredible deer was fast and had great feet faster than the wind. At first Hercules turned his mind to its footprints in the forest. Thereafter, seeing this deer, Hercules began to run with the greatest speed. It ran during much of the day and did not stop by night. Yet in vain; he was not able to overtake the stag. At last, after he had ran for the entire year, he seized the weary stag by the running and returned it alive to King Eurystheus.
